Employer wont pay for my training

I have been in my job for over 10 years now and over the past 3 years i have been asking whether i can do my nvq level 4, and everytime i ask i have been fobbed off with that their is no money in the budget, and that all personal training has been put on hold due to the recession and that i am lucky to even have a job etc etc.

anyway i found out last week that one of my other colleague (whos been there for 3 years) is doing the nvq 4 and noone even mentioned it. It was all kept hush hush only found out when the assessor turned up. I am pretty p**ssed off with this as i had been askin to do this course well before her. I am supposed to work in a investor in peoples organisation!!!

I dont know whether i should complain or should i just leave it?

well i am the only asian workin there, i just feel i am stuck in my job with no room for progression where everyone says i can do better and i know myself i can. Everytime i try and progress further just feel like im hitting against a brick wall. As this was my first proper job since leaving school and all my colleagues are like my best mates thats why i stayed that long.

Maybe im just better finding a job elsewhere - just need to put more effort into lookin. filling out forms and interiews seems hard work lol

It's probably a grievance you want to raise, rather than making a complaint. Your company will (or should) have a policy, if not look at the ACAS website.

However, before you do that, is your colleague paying for their own training? Is your grievance that they won't let you do it, or that they won't pay for you to do it?

How about paying for the training course yourself, and then when the next annual review comes round use it as part of the justification for a pay rise.

That's what I have done throughout my career.

Depending on the vocational field, NVQ level 4's can be several thousands of pounds................

And.... I refer to my post above.

I have spent 10k in personal development in the last 5 years, which helped in negotiating more than a 50% payrise over the same period.

I guess you could play the race card if you feel you have been discriminated against on those grounds. However, it may be that this other person has much more potential than you to develop. Obviously none of us here can see both of your appraisal records but the answer might be there.

With all due respect, your last comment says it all. How can you have the motivation to study for NVQ 4 if you can't be bothered to fill out an application form. Sounds to me like you want something in return for not much.

Here we go! Along with this comment below.

Have you considered that the person that has had the training is actually in a better to position to cope with it.
Maybe they are a more investable employee.
Maybe they CAN'T be bothered, whereas you can't by your own admission.

To play the race card so early demonstrates quite quickly one of the reasons you may have been overrlooked, so before you blame it on who you pray to, or the colour of your skin, you should look a bit deeper first.

It can be any of the reason stated above or you are just not pushy enough...

I've been fobbed off by the budget excuse for 2 years until I had enough and said I am leaving. Guess what? Suddenly there was "exception" made for me... I still left year later (still within my training period but I could have done because I negotiated no training contract as they couldn't give me payrise that I deserved as I paid for my studies myself before so I was more qualified then when I started).

If the employer won't give you training, won't give you promotion or anything, there are only 2 options - either they don't think you can do it or they think you are pushover.

Either way - start looking for new job. You will see what happens next.

    Hi,

The OP was asked specifically by a poster whether or not there could be any grounds for discrimination.

She, presumably truthfully, answered that she was the only Asian there. At no point in her subsequent posts did I get the impression that she was attempting to use this as "the race card".

Some of you are doing the OP a dis-service.

    You are very naive.
The OP quite clearly insinuated the race card was possible before going onto admit basically they couldnt be bothered with effort of getting a new job.

Probably precisely why they arent being giving more training as they dont fancy the effort of hard work and wants the extra cash with no effort.
