British Gas Homecare Magnaclean Quote

Have recently had our annual service and the British Gas Engineer has advised us to have a magnaclean fitted as we have a noise coming from the boiler. He suggested it was due to scale (heat exchanger kettling) and hence the reason for the need to fit a magnaclean.
We've been quoted £330.00 and was wondering if this is about the price we should be expecting to pay or are we being ripped off.
Any ideas/comments please?
Many thanks.

they suggested this to me too - AND to have a powerflush for an extra £450!!!
I had a plumber fit a magnaclean for £200
Difficult to get a 'private' plumber to powerflush as the equiptment is expensive.0 -

Good afternoon: many independent RGIs own powerflush machines (the OH has had one since 2001) and others will rent from HSS etc. I recommend the Boiler Buddy or Spirotech Magnabooster over the Magnaclean...BG's price is well OTT. Cost will vary according to your location in the UK.

Thanks for the reply.
They've not suggested we have the powerflush, just the magnaclean in our case.
If I had a local plumber fit, would this invalidate my Homecare agreement do you know?0 -

Hi...my OH has done both for BG Homecare customers...he gives his customers an invoice with details of the work which can be presented to BG as evidence that the required works have been conducted by a professional (at half the price quoted by BG).

It won't matter who does it, but I'll need to check the terms and conditions, I think they won't cleasn it at your annual visit if it was onstalled by someone else. I'll go double check that. It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0

If BG reckon it is scale, then a standard magnaclean won't help. Limescale is not magnetic!0

Have just taken out a Homecare 400 package with British Gas as we have been having problems with our Baxi 105e boiler and heating for months.
The guy who came out (the same day) really seemed to know his stuff. He got three washing bowls of dirty water out of the boiler, showed me various parts that were clogged up and handfuls of what looked like soil out of there too.
He told me that the system needed a powerflush as there is obvious sludge in the system and that they could do that and fit the brand new slimline magnabooster for £695.I have ten radiators. He told me that if I don't my water will not be covered under the contract. We are in the process of selling the house and could well do without forking all that money, which we are going to have to scrape together. The heating engineers who fitted the system over 7 years ago were absolute bandits and had been recommended. They were as nightmare, but I won't bore you with the stories.
Its making my blood boil that this may have just been suggested because the engineers are on commission, he seemed so honest and said he does not like rpping people off, he even put a part in, even though he said he shoul'nt and did'nt know how long it will last.I just don't know what to do.0 -
If you are moving soon I wouldn't bother with the powerflush from BG. You don't even know if the people you sell your property to will want BG cover in the future.
You could get a local engineer to flush it out for about half that cost, if it really bothers you.0 -
