Suggestions for cleaning rust from toaster cage?

Options
Hi,

I have a Dualit toaster which was in storage for several months when I moved house.
Unfortunately, there was a leak and the toaster 'cage' (the wire section that holds the bread in place), has now rusted.

Is there a recommended way for cleaning the rust? I'm concerned that a scouring pad will scratch the cage and then is likely to rust again just from condensation.

If I dismantle it, would soaking the cage in Coca-cola remove the rust?

Or is there another way to do it?

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I dont know if this will help much, but by accident I found a way to clean rust off my old work tools.

I was descaling my electric kettle with the usual descaler, and while it was working I was sorting out some old tools that I found in the shed.
I was going to scour them with a hard abrasive scourer, but they were quite bad with rust, so I stuck them in an old bucket, and being frugal lol, when the descaler had done its job, rather than chuck it away, I thought lets see if this will work on my tools.
So I soaked them in the descaled water from the kettle, left them in there for about an 30-45 mins,( I had boiled the descaled water up again) I didnt add anything else, just the old descaled water.

When I took them out, half the rust had gone, so I got one of those old sponge pads that I had used and now was a bit worn, and I gently scoured the rest off.

I could not believe it, they looked as good as new.:D

I wonder if vinegar might do the job then (that's what I use to descale the kettle and I think it's likely to be at least as acidic as a proprietary product)?
