as someone has said, bowel movements happen usually 15 minutes or so after eating. One of our kittens couldn't get the hang of the litter tray for a few weeks, so i found if i encouraged him to chase a ball around after eating while we were in the room with the litter tray, i then watched for him squatting, and lifted him into the tray. After a few times he had got the hang of it, and i found they preferred a different area of the room than i had originally put the tray. If they consistently go for the same corner, that is usually what they are trying to tell you.
As for mucky bums, one of ours is lame in one leg, and has long fur, so i have to keep a special pair of scissors for when he doesn't quite manage to squat properly. Cat hair cuts. They don't tell you these things do they when you take them on do they.0 -
hi i was just wondering if anyone has any ideas on my kittens erratic toileting. she seemed to be doing well for a few days and now we seem to have had a few accidents!!!she is soo lovely but the smell is getting a bit irritating:rolleyes:0

If your still having probs with toileting. Mums tend to lick their bottoms post feeds to stimulate them going to the toilet not advocating this but if you get a damp cotton ball or similar and just wipe botty post meal encouraging them into their box at this time it can often work it can be very frustrating having them pooing round the house we tend to confine them to one area when unsupervised also we found that as they are very clean animals generally we would find ourselves cleaning out their tray 2-3 times a day especially if you have other cats. on the subject of cat litter we always use wooden pellets as they are less irritant to the cats skin (we had one cat with feline acne and it got worse with the clay litter) thankfully were past the kitten stage with ours so they all go out to the loo! hold in there it will get better.Official DFW nerd 206 Proud to be dealing with my debt

I am sitting here laughing away at these posts, as a cat owner I totally know where everyone is coming from...I had no experience of cats, and fell in love with Aggie(in the pic) when i saw her, she had been dumped in a bag with her 2 sisters and the SSPCA had rescued her.We finally got her home 6 weeks after first seeing her as she had a bad ear infection.
The first poo she did I was worried sick-it was like a horseshoe, much bigger than her, I even asked hubby to call the vet lol...though there was something wrong with her! he couldnt stop laughing.
Aggie will only poo in a clean tray, fussy little cat she is.But hey thats why we luv her!

hi, all well ive just come off of night shift and what has daisy left me, a nice bit of poo in the corner were she did one the day before. i picked it up and put it in the litter tray then i put daisy in the litter tray and she covered it up for me!!!. In the corner were she had done it is a pile of hard back books and she was trying to cover the poo with them she was pawing at them as if she expected the books to cover it!!. Ive now moved her into the living room so going back to being in one room again and will persevere with that for a couple of weeks i think. Also my hubby told me that last night our other cat muffin and daisy went nose to nose to say hello i think(for the first time) and just when daisy was feeling safe muffin swiped her one across the cheek just to let her know whose boss!!!;)0

After training approx 60 semi-ferals, I think I' know a bit to help.... usually kittens mums do the honours re licking the kits bottoms to ensure they poo. Of course, you as mum should be taking over that job.

Raksha wrote:What I use for puppies is bio washing powder solution after you've cleaned/soaked up as much as possible, let it dry, then spray with white spirit or surgical spirit (white vinegar will work at a pinch, but your 'boudoir' will smell like a chippie
)
Jackie - I would second the advice given above (but possibly not the vinegar - stick to surgical spirit).
It must be biological washing powder as this breaks down the actual cat pee. While it may smell clean to you, it'll still smell like a loo to the kitten - the surgical spirit solves that problem. You should be able to get that from any chemist.
Also, have you considered putting the litter tray elsewhere? Maybe the current location is too open for kitty. They like a bit of privacy! When s/he goes in the correct place praise praise praise and praise again! I used to put my little kitten into the tray and he'd be sitting there wondering what was going on -- just kept praising him, and eventually realised he'd get more praise if he produced something. Bless..never any accidents in this house now.
If none of the above works then perhaps a covered cat loo might get around the problem if it's put in an appropriate corner and s/he is shown where it is and what it's for, and lots of praise again.0
