Are you using the same litter that the kitten was used to at his "Mum's"? We recently changed the brand, but not the type of litter we use and one of our cats developed cystitis because he was trying to hold on until he got outside. Although he's 5 months old, I remember the breeder saying he was a pest for not using the litter tray, and she used that brand of litter.

It won't work and it is cruel. The animal makes no association between it 'going' in 'the wrong place' and you rubbing it's nose in it. All you'll do is make it become wary of you. There are much kinder and more efficient ways of house training any animal. :)

  • hmm, on the same subject, I'm about to move house and finally having my Merlin coming to live with me (he's been at my Mum's).

I quite like the wooden stuff, but have seen that salty one that dries out the 'waste' and you just remove the poo and it lasts for a month (and apparently there are no smells) but it's pricey!

What is the best litter to use?

cats are very clean animals and wont go in odd places without good reason. The only advice I can give is, make sure you have the same litter than he/she had when with mum. My kitten was used to clay litter and when i first got her i used the light weight stuff, she didnt understand that it was where she was supposed to go to the loo as she didnt recognize it!

I would confine him/her to one room for a few days at least, a whole house is a big place for a little kitten to take in, so let him/her explore and add a room at a time.

Also make sure that the litter tray is no where near the food. This puts them off too.

and def dont rub nose in it, it will just cause distrust and fear.

I hope you solve this problem and enjoy your new addition to the family!

With regards to litter...we used Catsan at first thinking dearest meant best...found out that aint always the case, and we now use ASDA's Tiger litter and it is great at just under £2 for a bag.
