Hello Orange, my router has been resetting itself a lot recently, the internet lamp changes colour and flashes as it tries to reconnect.
I have micro filters in all my telephone sockets, I'm not running the router from an extension and I've tried plugging it into the master test socket with no improvement.
I've listened to the phone line and there are no pops crackles or other noise.

I've had a friend looking at my download noise margin and its only xxdb, i believe this is why I have problems.
Could you lower my download sync speed from xxxxkbps, to see if it improves.

Brilliant, thank you! Now I just need to find a person at Orange who will understand that & not get all flustered when it is not on their script (as happened last time when I was nowhere near as technical!)

Thanks all, will let you know what happens...

    Has it been resolved?

No, Orange are saying that they can't lower the speed.

I'm waiting to speak to my tech guy again today!

I have found a set of router stats if they mean anything to anyone:
    Download speed achieved : 1868Kbps
DSL conn. rate 3136 (down) 448 (up)
    IP profile 2000 Kbps

I don't think you got those from the router as you wouldn't get the IP profile from there. The upstream sync and mention of IP profile strongly suggest that this is a resold BT IPstream connection and not Orange LLU which explains why Orange can't make any manual changes. In fact they shouldn't need to as BTw have a Dynamic Line Management system which is supposed to drop your speeds to ensure stablility. Unfortunately it sometimes fails to work well.

The minimum stats (upstream and downstream) needed to offer any sensible comment are..

    Sync rate (we have those)
    Attenuation
    Noise margin

You may find instructions for getting them at http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php

pardon my ignorance, as you will see others on the thread have asked me for stats but I had been leaving that to the tech guy to check. I just found a printout he left me & thought perhaps that is what the others were asking for?! (oops.)

I'll have a go at the other thing, but I'm sure he has looked at that too.

What you say about Orange vs BT makes sense, I think that is why speeds are so limited in this area - unless we opt to switch to Virgin.

I wonder if there is a way of speaking to BT about the DLM system?

BT will not talk to you, they will refer you back to your ISP.
Its really not that difficult to obtain your router stats, and knowing how to do it will reduce your dependency on a third party and increase your knowledge of how broadband works.
You are currently syncing at just over 3Mbps which suggests you are on a long line, we need to confirm this in order to make any more meaningful suggestions.

BTW What exchange are you on?
That gum you like is coming back in style.

    I'm working on it!

All I can tell you now is that, yes, the guy who ran all those tests for me did say we were a long way from the exchange with very old cables and it is impossible to exceed 4Mbps in this area.

Sorry I have no idea what exchange, will try & find out.

    Not a problem.

Pop your telephone number in the search box on the following link.

    I'm sorry, but it is!

Its asking me to install "Dr Speedtouch" & I just can't follow the instructions which involve writing stuff & far more technical things than I am comfortable with.

I'm not trying to be obtuse, and would love to be able to sort this out myself, but am having problems.

Thanks for trying to help though - I'm sure people like me must be very frustrating to you.

Well the good news is that your exchange is unbundled by O2 which will potentially allow you to get a far better internet connection than Orange.

The bad news is that if you moved to them they'd send you a new router which you'd need to connect up.

I strongly suspect that you haven't correctly loctated your router on that page unless you really do still use that venerable antique USB modem which requires Dr Speetouch (the 330). If you really do then coupled with still being on Orange when O2 are avaialable suggest to me that your Tech Guy really isn't looking after you all that well.
