Cat Hit & Run

Hi

our cat was hit by a car yesterday (we love him very much - he has a great personallity, thinks he's a dog)

We have taken him to the vets and they say we could be facing a bill of up to £1,500. We can borrow this money from family (so its not going to put us on the breadline, but we are not made of money). And any ideas on how to track the person that hit him. The vet said the driver should have noticed it, as if the cat had been a smaller one he would almost certainly have died as was hit with force.

If your car is hit by someone with no insurance there is a fund you can claim from, is there anything like this for Cats?

Note:
We dont have insurance - so please dont post going.... 'you should have insurance...' as smart alekky replies won't help anyone

    :(Sorry about your cat:(

Cats are not subject to the same laws as dogs.

Nor are the subject to the same protection as dogs.

If you hit a cat you don't even have to stop, you have to report hitting a dog.

Does the treatment the vet is proposing have a high chance of working?

OP I am so sorry to hear about your cat. As far as I know there is no legal requirement for a driver to report hitting a cat, so that might not prove to be worth persuing. I hope your pet recovers well. X

The law considers that cats are feral and cannot be trained as dogs can, so their owners are not responsible for any injury/damage done by them. As a corollary to this, motorists do not have to report it to the police if they run over a cat. No different to running over a rabbit so no insurance fund (There isn't even one for dogs, which is a reportable accident)

  • Thank you all for replying, and being so friendly as well!!

The fees are for a few overnight and jaw rewiring so we're hoping he should be fine!!

Agree with that about the law - its idiotic.

Hope your cat gets well soon, and recovers fully quickly.

Is it worth checking household insurance to see if theres anything in there?? I dont know anything about it at all,so am probably talking rubbish - but it seems to cover all kinds of weird and wonderful things !!

It's incredibly sad, but when you learn to drive, now, should this question arise, you are told NOT to swerve to avoid hitting a cat.

Having said that, I wouldn't have been able to ... I would have gone up on the pavement rather than hit a cat .. any animal, come to that. It's only the saddos who get their glees from causing harm to animals who would mow one down intentionally.

Quite expensive for just getting his jaw wired and hospitalisation! Fractured jaws are pretty easy to repair in cats (that is if it is just the mandibular symphysis that has been fractured, of course it would be more expensive to get other parts of the jaw fixed as more complicated) and cats do recover REALLY well from fractured jaws (if it is the "simpler" fracture) :) The main thing in the first few days is pain relief and getting them comfortable and over the shock and then the operation. Some cats may need a nasogastric tube (nasal feeding tube) for the first day or two until they feel able to eat again. Hope he recovers well!
