Half Portions From The Chinese.

OK,It's Friday...I've been doing the garden...I cant be bothered to cook...So I fancied a Chinese, now we have three Chinese's in my small village (and one Indian, two chippies & a Pizza place!)
Of the three Chinese's,one is wayyyyyy too expensive as it's mainly a sit in resturant, the other one I would'nt touch since it changed hands & the third always burns the noodles!
In the next village, the's a chinese & I remembered a menu hitting my door mat a while back so I dug it out....
Far more impressive menu than my local lot AND they do half & half portions (half main & half rice) for £3.50!
So I ordered half Beef Curry & Fried Rice plus a portion of spring rolls, total came to £5.30 the lot!! Brucey Bargain!:T
A main alone from my local is over £7.00 &,I dunno about you,but I end up freezing or binneng half of it as you always get wayyy to much imho. This place was just right.I'm contenetly stuffed!
So why dont more take away's do this?I dont like wasting food so this seems like a good money saving idea!

I know what you mean about them giving you way too much, do Chinese people eat a lot in one go or something? :)

Well we went to a great Chinese buffet for lunch today. The lunch time buffet is a good bit cheaper than the dinner time meal and we are still full. However, most of the customers could have benefited from losing a few pounds (including OH and I :() but the staff were all really skinny.

Ours does a kids meal that's actually enough for an adult but it's only sausage, mini spring rolls or chicken balls with a sauce, I'd much prefer it if they did half portions of the other meals.

I don't know why their portions are so large, maybe because they know people will buy them anyway?

If you look at what Asian people generally eat it's a larger amount of rice and a much smaller amount of meat/sauce than Westerners would.

The meat and sauce is more of a "rice seasoner" than it is the main event.

Half portions is a good idea though - bit like tapas - if you're sharing you can get more of a variety of dishes.

That's what me & the darling GF did,I got the curry & fried rice & she got the chilli chicken & boiled rice which came to around a tenner for the both of us.So we both had a bit of each others on the plates.
(I forgot to include her's in my first post, something which she has pointed out to me...!)

meh. Chinese portions are fine as they are. there's nothing better than having chinese one night, then decanting a bit into a bowl for a hastily reheated midnight snack, a bit of cold chinese for breakfast, and then if theres any left reheating it up for lunch or a snack :)

The chinese round the corner from where I am right now offers one dish that's just in one container. It's the long container and for £4.20 you can have a bit of boiled rice, 6 battered chicken balls and a splash of sweet and sour sauce.

Although my preference is for egg fried rice, I'm prepared to go without to get the cheaper dish.... sometimes I'll just buy a main dish from a takeaway and make my own rice.

I usually opt for the best/cheapest way to eat something, rather than just choosing what I fancy, meaning I can treat myself more often. I tend to have a takeaway about 3-4x a year.

It's more common in Chinese culture to serve food "family style", so one or two main dishes plus a vegetable and rice to share, rather than each person having a separate portion of a main. We don't tend to get takeaways very often, but when we do we usually order a few dishes to share - much more reasonable portions that way!
