Should I get a price capped or green energy tariff? Article Discussion Area

Who are the main players? The usual suspects? Can the utilities ever really lose - or to put it another way, can the customer ever win?
TIA
YOU MUST CAP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!! Prices are always on the up and down, the prices get brought down and just when you think its safe they get thrown back up another 15%.
Suppliers never lose. The capped rate will actually be higher than the current standard rate to cover the fall in prices from time to time, although this doesnt seem like a benefit it does pay off.
As we all know everything is so expensive now and still getting more expensive so this will be the same for gas and electric.
There are also green capped tariffs you can get so check out all the search engines.0 -
I'm looking for a capped tarriff, because I expect prices to continue upwards much faster than my wages.
I've just checked and the best that two comparison sites could find were 1-year capped deals from British Gas at about what I'm paying now for my standard npower tariff. I'd prefer to avoid BG, as I've known too many people have too many problems with them. Big problems, like being harassed for a gas bill at a house they don't own and have never lived in.
npower have a 3-year cap at 7% over standard tariff. That sounds like a good deal to me - does anyone think gas&electricity prices won't increase by more than 7% in the next three years?
So either it's a good deal I should take up for peace of mind or I'm missing something in my ignorance. I'd welcome opinions as to which it is.0 -

Hi,
I'm also new to this, never capped before.
I'm with E-on and don't necessarily want to switch supplier but do want to cap. On the E-on site though it doesn't seem to make it clear how much extra I'll be paying per month.
HELP!
Thanks.0 -
I picked up Martin's recent comment on now being the time to fix/cap, but when I checked (ALL) the comparison sites yesterday, I could find NO capped or fixed rate on offer (for gas only in the Eastern region). Have they all been withdrawn/oversubscribed - as a result of Martin's advice?
In passing, I've taken Scottish Power's fixed rate electricity offer (till 2011, at a very small premium to today's best price), following a capped rate with them for the past year.0 -
If it helps i am with eon for electric and was going to swop yesterday but went on the site today and all capped tariffs have gone

I checked today and E.On offer Price Protection Plan V15:
"Switch to E.ON Price Protection today and we guarantee not to increase your energy prices until October 2009"
Any thoughts on whether this is worth it?MFW #185

While not necessarily 'green' there is equipower and equigas to consider as well. My mum raves about them as she is a light user so therefore pays less with them than she would with other suppliers (even those that offer low use tariffs). This is becasue they charge the same price per unit regardless of the units used, rather than charging a higher price for the first x units and then a lower price for the remaining units used.
Also, I know green energy tariff for businesses have the bonus of not having to pay a 10% climate levy for the electricity - is this not the same for domestic green tariffs?0 -
