Hi All
If anyone can advise, it would be appreciated
I bought a laptop (under special offer) from Dell.
When I received the 1st laptop, I found out that the hard disk space was 320GB instead of 500GB.
So after lots of calling and tranfers, Dell replaced the 1st laptop.
I checked the second laptop and again, the HD size was wrong. I informed Dell and they sent another replacement.
3rd laptop and it's exactly the same issue as before.
My options are (given that I really want the laptop)
1) Get dell to keep sending me laptops until I get the right Hdsize
2) I spoke to a techical dell representative and he's saying either me or an engineer to take out the HD and they will send a replacement which I can screw back on.
3) Ask for a full refund but then I'll lose out the discount because of the special offer
I'm considering option2 but surely Dell must be able to provide a laptop without anyone tinkering with it.
Any comments are appreciated

Only takes a couple of minutes to change a HDD. I would take option 2, it's by far the easiest option.
Try to get them to send the replacmeent first though or you will be without a laptop whilst waiting for post.
I assume it isn't a simple case of the HDD being partitioned??0 -

Hi No the HD hasn't been partitioned. I was told to check the BIOS screen.
My view is if I was willing to take a risk with a laptop that had been tinkered with, then I would have bought from Dell outlet as they are cheaper.
Since i'm buying new, shouldn't I expect a laptop that is straight from the factory with laptop box sealed, has been subjected to dell's standard tests and will give me peace of mind that there is nothing wrong with it. If an engineer or myself change part of it, all the dell tests for reliability will be pointless.
Thanks0 -
Of course that is personal choice and you do have a point.
It is my opinion though, that it is just a hard drive, no big shakes at all. Simple to change.
I would rather the quick win than drag it out for potentially Months not having a laptop at all whilst it is resolved.
Whilst the HDD is an important integral part of the laptop, as far as reliabilty is concerned, I would only be concerned with the Mobo, CPU, Graphics, Sound etc (and to an extent the RAM), rather than the simple to change plug and play items like a HDD.0 -

Seconded - on my Dell, and that of my OH's, a recovery partition has been built into the HDD, so that we have primary partition C: and recovery partition
No offence, OP, but you're sure you're looking at the HDD size, and not the primary partition size?0 -

I thoought that the BIOS screen didn't show partitions. I'll go and check
Update
I have checked and there are only 2 drives C: andwhere the D:drive is the dvd writer.

It's not just 2 screws that need to be removed in this delll studio laptop. There seems to be a panel at the back with like 8 screws. There are no other panels with 2 screws.
What I'm thinking is to ask for a refund and then re-order a different model. This new model will have the standard 500gb as opposed to the previous one where the 500GB was a 1 week special.
However I then lose the discount that I got with the 1st order. I'm not really looking for compensation but if they could give me the same discount with the new model, then that should be the end of it.0 -
How much is the discount??
There isn't a great deal between 320Gb and 500Gb (apart form the obvious!!)
The 320Gb will still last a fair while but if you think you will fill 320Gb in no time, you will probably fill the 500Gb shortly after.
500Gb drives are circa £50
I paid £620
If I try to order the same again, then I'll pay £670. To match my laptop, I increased ram to 4gb and hd to 500gb
http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&kc=HDP&l=en&m_30=321942&oc=N0074902&rbc=N0074902&s=dhs
So I had like £50 discount
I'm thinking to re-order and get
http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&kc=NRS17453&l=en&m_30=321942&oc=N0074904&rbc=N0474911&s=dhs
which is £730, with the only difference being the processor but then it costs me £110 more0 -
My opinion (again), an extra 180Gb is in no way worth anywhere near £50.
I would take the saving and be happy (even if they didn't send a replacement).
It is far too easy buying IT to pay that little bit more money for the higher spec, then a little bit more for an even higher spec.... then a litle bit more....etc etc.
Before you know it you have doubled your budget.0
