Confused with My Line Speed?!?!?!

Just cancelled BT broadband and trying to sign with Tiscali...

When registering with Tiscali, they do a check on my line and this is what they report

Tiscali 2Mb Broadband is not available, but you can get 1Mb Broadband.

So I did a check with BTBroadband and they reported

Our initial test on your phone line indicates that you should be able to have BT Broadband with a likely maximum speed of up to 3Mb (Megabits per second).

So I'm not sure why they both are differant. and if this is the case I don't feel like paying £15 for a 1meg line!

Any idea's on why they are reporting differant????

It seems like you've been given info about two different products.

Tiscali have given you your expected speed for ADSL.

BT have given you your expected speed for ADSL Max.

These are different products. Tiscali don't offer Max (I think, but I'm not 100%). They have their own LLU equipment that they offer faster speeds with. They can only connect you to this if they have their euipment installed in your local exchange. Otherwise, they will only offer you normal broadband (ADSL), this is why you've been quoted 1Mb by them.

If you look for a provider you can have ADSL Max with, you should be able to get up to 3Mb speeds (no guarantees though).

I am with Pipex and when I use their site (box on the left type in your phone number) it says I can get speeds of up to 6.5 meg. Currently I am on 2meg but hoping to upgrade in the next few days.
Not the cheapest around but I have had a good service from them

So many options. It's hard to find the right one, and i'm always skeptical going with companys ive never heard of.

I checked Zazizam but there uncapped 2 meg is £22. im looking for £15 2meg uncapped

I have checked Eclipse, they say they can get me speeds of up to 3meg...

    they seem a good company...

with eclipse been adsl max and i'm capable of havin speeds of up to 3meg, does this mean i will deffinatly get speed better than 1meg?

but looking at the tiscali speed report - it seems you can only get up to 1mb (£18 from zazizam).... even the 3mb adslmax speed that BT tells you suggests that you won't be able to get 2mb normal adsl

typically... if your line maximum is iffy around getting 1mb normal - ie. you may be able to get it (like mine is) - then your adslmax speed will be about 3.5mb...

... so if you looking for an adsl max package - you will have to join one of these upto 8mb speeds to actually get the 3mb speed that you hope for, otherwise you won't get any higher than what appears to be 1mb... its all down to your line length

unfortunately - an uncapped adslmax package will cost you more than £15... unless you op for a capped package... which i believe zazizam offer 5GB for £16....

    Thanks MrJ,

I have checked with Eclipse, and they are adsl max, and they have checked my line and they say i should get upto 3meg. They Unmetered usuage but have a 20gig peak cap 6pm-12am. this is not problem as i will do all my downloading during the day (uncapped) this is for £14. seems a good deal.

I just wondered that if i went with an adsl max rather than tiscali who are not, would i deffinalty get more than 1meg? if not then as tiscali are unmetered all the time i may as well go for 1meg with them.

well you should get a better speed.... even if it were only 2mb - but adslmax is better than normal adsl 99.9% of the time.... remember it will take about 10days for the service to find your lines maximum speed
