Is HTC subsiding some networks to compete with the iphone ?

I've noticed several 12 month contracts that come with a free HTC Desire. Total cost over the year is from £360 - £480. For a phone that costs circa £400, thats a good deal.

The same providers want money up front for a W995 on a similar contract.

  • The networks sub the phone to sell the contract.

The networks sub the phone to sell the contract.

Correct and it doesn't cost them as much as £400 per unit.

Lots of companies use loss leaders to boost awareness of their products. I was one of the very lucky ones to get a Desire on the day they were released through T-mobile so it's costing me about the same as a sim free version but with calls, texts and unlimited internet included. The subsequent threads on here and HUKD certainly helped raise the profile of both HTC and this handset, and it's snowballed from there. I notice no-one from HTC has ever said the phone is an alternative to the iPhone, they've let everyone else do that.
