Or, if you fancy the culinary equivalent of snowboarding, try this ...

    THREE TIN SOUP

    Serves 2 – 3

    INGREDIENTS

1 tin of meat or fish
1 tin of a vegetable or bean
    1 tin of something else
    250ml of water
    Ground pepper to taste

    METHOD

Open the tins and drain off any brine, oil or water. Wash off any tomato sauce from baked beans or fish as it will dominate all the other flavours.

Put all of the tinned ingredients and the water into a saucepan on a medium heat. Stir thoroughly. Bring to the boil, then turn down the heat until it is just boiling (simmering). Cook until all of the ingredients are thoroughly cooked.

If you have a food processor, put the soup in it and blend it to the desired consistency. If you have a hand blender, put it in the soup and blend it to the desired consistency. If you don’t have a food processor or hand blender, use a potato masher, press the soup through a sieve with the back of a spoon, or leave it lumpy. If you used a food processor, rinse out the saucepan and put the soup back into the saucepan.

Put the saucepan on a low heat and reheat the soup gently.

    Season with the pepper.

    ADDITIONS & ALTERATIONS

The idea of the third tin is to add a completely different flavour and/or texture to the other two ingredients.

The vegetarian option is to use a tin of a vegetable, a tin of a bean and a tin of something else vegetarian.

Add a suitable stock cube. Add a teaspoon of a suitable herb or spice.

Remove some of the lumpy ingredients before blending and put them back in afterwards.

I've tried this with minced beef & onion + carrots + mushrooms. It was fine, but the budget brand minced beef I used was a bit heavy on the onions. I'll trade up a brand level next time.

Make stovies with it. Sometimes I make stovies with tinned stewing steak from Lidl's if I have no leftovers to make them with. I'd think that you could do it with tinned mince too.

Mix it with a big bowl of cooked chopped potatoes and mixed vegetables and use as a filling for lots of pasties. You can freeze some too.

    Stovies are a scottish recipe.

Its basically mince beef, onion and potatoes.

I usually cook the onion, then add the mince. drain. put in enough gravy to cover and add in some peeled uncooked boiled potatoes. cover and leave for half hour - potatoes are cooked lovely and its a surprisingly filling dish. Think you can add veg too if you like but I always just prefer the mince and onions.

With tinned meat i'd soften a diced onion, then add the mince. Then i'd put thinly sliced (or diced potatoes) on top of everything, and let it cook slowly with a lid on. Then i'd stir everything together in the pot. It's nice served with oatcakes and beetroot.

for the cottage pie just tip the minced beef and onion into a casserole dish and top with a load of mashed potato! I like to dot the top with butter then put into a hot oven for about half hour until nicely browned. Thats the basic version! but its lovely! especially with brown sauce and chips on the side!

As a toastie filling - it makes suprisingly nice toasties and still works even without a toastie machine. If you haven't got a toastie machine do the following:
Put a slice of bread under the grill and toast one side.
Turn over and spread liberally with tinned mince.
Pop back under the grill for a minute or so to heat the mince through.
Top with another slice of bread and return to grill to toast the top of that slice.
