I've always wondered if it's worth doing a booze cruise. Doesn't paying for all the travel etc cancel out the savings you make?

I had to make an unexpected trip from Yorkshire to Calais to rescue my OH from Geneva recently (don't ask! We said "Send CASH!!!"), and somehow £300 worth of wine made its way into my car boot. For a while it wasn't worth doing to trip to the Continent, what with the exchange rate and everything, but now it's gone up so much here that it's well worth a trip, and we shall be going regularly again. Ferry fares for day trips are really cheap ( think £20 - £25?) ( or you can use Tesco points on the Eurotunnel), and the savings are excellent. In fact, one of the ferry companies had a deal on recently where they gave you free wine that was worth more than the day fare.

You can also look on the websites before you go to see who's got the best deals on, which saves a lot of time. Majestic and Tesco usually seem to be very good. I got a lot of a really excellent Robertson South African Sauv blanc for about £1.90 a bottle, and Chillean Chardonnay that hits the spot for about £2 a bottle.

TIP: Buy a bottle each to start with of what you think you might be interested in, and taste them before you buy large quantities. Take a corkscrew too, in case '

I should also add that if you buy enough, some shops will throw in a free ferry trip or a hefty discount.
    Hope is not a strategy.
