Phil, don't worry about it mate.

I work for a University and I can't wait for September.

Wall to wall good looking young ladies should take your mind off things and....... buggar, you have a gf...... whats wrong with window shopping?!?!

Seriously, wait till you get back and then have a word with your personal tutor. They will be able to help you better face to face than on e-mail whilst you are disturbing their [STRIKE]summer holiday[/STRIKE] class preparation time!

  • our course is so backwards. we've all been told we've got to do our data collection for our dissertations over the summer despite the fact that we haven't been given dissertation outlines and instructions - that will be done in the first term of this year. duh!

and don't get me started on exams. we have loads in our course at the end of each year. we aren't even allowed to go over previous exam questions with lecturers as it's seen as a form of cheating to them. they won't even discuss what it is they want from exams - and they wonder why this course is so demotivating.

can anyone sense the annoyance in my tone!!!! with so many more kids now getting better marks in gcses and a levels with each year, my grades look inferior in comparison - and now i'm in the final year of a degree i took hoping to improve my career chances in an industry i wanted to be in. the course is awful - i should have worked after my a levels rather than gone into H.E.

p.s. all our lecturers are away from their offices over the summer - so there's no hope of contacting them for help with dissertations. no fair!

tomorrow will be a better day....

I agree, some departments seem to go on about starting them in the summer but yet none of info is available until sept/ oct.

  • Hey... I've been in my office/lab ALL summer! This dept. Physics has been full all Summer - except for when some of the staff have gone away to conferences - this is really the only time in the year it's possible due to teaching loads.

As for giving you work to do over the Hols - that's a bit daft if no one is going to be araound to help you out!

Not real work, but research project prep. It is a bit stupid giving no help as most students will never have done a proper research project before.

I'd rather have written that one than the 'Nature of Instituations' one I had to do - that said, I hated writing it, seemed to take ages to do and not flow anywhere near as good as the others yet that was my (joint) highest mark

How come the start of the first year seemed fun, but the start of the second and third year are just "OH GOD" moments?

I really am not looking forward to going back at all

cos at the first year you didn't know what to expect. You'd hope you'd be excited at the start of the first year - as otherwise it would have been a bit silly applying for that course! I'm slightly more keen about this year than last, as I'm hopeful the modules I've chosen will be a bit better.. but still wish I didn't have to get through this year. However the prospect that I've found an MSc I want to do now has cheered me up and encouraging me to get my BA so I can go do that.

Have you looked at dissertations that past students have done? This really helped me when I was struggling with how to approach it because it gave me an idea of the sort of thing I was expected to produce. Just an idea, cos they were on different topics of course, but it did help to get a feel for it.
