Can you get hold of some Nesorexa (poison pellets)- it sorted out our infestation, but you may need to keep baiting for quite a while (and maybe forever just to keep them under control). Be careful how you bait too, especially if you have pets.

I would also be inclined to invest in some bins to store your bags before they get collected (pref metal ones as rats can chew through the plastic ones, believe me!)

Get yourself an air gun or rifle and pick them off one by one. :)

Just rebated the back of the shed with blocks, think they are called big cheese company. I find the neighbours compost bin is to blame.
    Kind Regards

Yeah honestly, we get a black recycling box, and a green bin for garden waste, but nothing for household waste. I have got an old style refuse bin, but most on the street just have bin liners, its like the 19th century :)

Yes, I think composting has a lot to answer for. It's a good idea in many ways but rats love them.

I have thought about that, not got an air gun or rifle, but I zapped one with my hose pipe :)

I am reluctant to use any more poison. There are a lot of cats in our neighbourhood, as much as they annoy me with their droppings all over my garden, I wouldn't want to be responsible for poisoning them

our council certainly comes out & deals with professionally for free, check if yours does, environmental health dept. cheaper than cheap traps which dont work!

I will email the council, see what they can do. Thanks

My house backs on to fields and I have a compost bin. I have lived here 15yrs and not once have I seen a rat until....... I found one dead on my lawn just before Christmas and about six weeks later found another dead one on my patio. My ginger moggy had obviously earned her keep for once. There have been no sitings since.

I did however see a mouse in my compost bin and have now stopped composting!

So my recommendation would be to get yourself a cat.

    Hope this helps.

We live in a very rural area - property backs onto open fields. We too had a rat taking up residence in our black dalek type composter bin!! It would feed on the dropped food from the bird feeders on the fence. We tried everything to get rid of it - including putting used cat litter down its tunneling holes to no avail. Didn't want to use poison as we have dogs as well as cats.

In the end it was our Springer who managed to get it before it could escape underground. Not nice I know but quick and effective. When disposing of the body, hubby said it was a female so it would only have been a matter of time before we had more than one !!
