Advise on rats

My house backs onto a field and we have spotted rats in our garden which have come from the field. The rat poison in the shops isn't much good as they are clearly still coming into the garden. Are there any effective ways of deterring them? It doesn't help that our council "Dudley" do not supply bins so everybody has their bin liners in their gardens.
Has anybody got any advice on how to keep them from our garden?

Rats are coming for food so make sure any bird feeders etc are unreachable and clean.
tidy up the garden regularly.
the thing about poison is that not only do you end up poisoning everything but the rats think your putting out a nice meal for them everynight. so one shows another etc.. so your inadvertently encouraging them. now thats ok with a couple because eventually you will kill them.
but you have a field full
you could try traps that are wholly enclosed so birds and other animals arnt harmed0 -
all weather rat blocks behind sheds etc does the job and they eat them like there is no tomorrow, not had any for a while lolKind Regards

We've got a rat getting into our compost bin. No idea what it is in there that it likes... but now added to my long list of jobs for the weekend is to ratproof a black "dalek" style compost bin. Any ideas, anyone? I know it's going to involve emptying the bin out, ew, fun.0

Need I go on
Close mesh wire underneath should sort it.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
we had one that lived in next doors shed then came to raid our bins at night, you can email the council and they'll come and set up a bait box and then come back a week or two later until there's no more sightings of the rat! Dogs don't work we have a terrier who never caught or dettered them! Hope you get it sorted cos they are creepy little things and they reproduce like nobodys business!Best Threads -
