Indeed cartons do leak, and I've had a few, but certainly not one in six (so far). I don't think that's a great ratio - at that rate I can expect one every couple of weeks, which certainly never happens with cartons.
The problem is that the bag is necessarily designed to be spiked by the jug, and hence can easily be spiked by anything else equally sharp. There is usually plenty of hard plastic packaging in my trolley with sharp enough corners to do damage - packets of chilled pasta parcels for example.0 -
I've just had my first leaking bag from the total of about six bought so far, so hardly a great 'leak ratio'. Was putting it on the checkout conveyer belt and it was coming out through a very small puncture in the side that must have somehow happened when it was in the trolley. I did have my doubts initially about the durability of these despite what I'd heard, and sadly I fear I may be being proved right. I think the only thing to do when buying them is to treat them in the same way you would with boxes of eggs i.e. use extra care and always keep them at the top of the trolley away from sharp stuff. Sadly the potential for catastrophe when these leak is higher than with egg boxes due to the obviously runnier nature of milk than eggs, and also the fact that there is two litres of it. My Dad once had a milk carton break in the boot of his car, and it took forever to finally get rid of the smell from the carpets. I'll carry on using them for now, but my enthusiasm in waning.
Was the carton of milk that broke in your dads boot crushed by something or was it a leaky one? Should of asked the shop to sort his car out if it was a leaky one.
My dad made tesco pay for valeting and a new boot liner when milk leaked in his boot! The foil wasn't covering the opening under the plastic lid.0 -
I can't remember to be honest, it was many years ago. It does beg the more general question though about what recourse you have when the bag breaks. I was lucky that mine was at the checkout since they simply replaced it. What happens when you get home and find that it has leaked all over the inside of your shopping bag, or even worse your car? I'd imagine that the supermarket would deny responsibility since it could have happened at any point having left the shop, either due to carelessness or not.0

Hi, please read my comment above somewhere - you can only use the milk bags in this jug as there is a hole in spout so if you put neat stuff in, i.e your juice, will spill everywhere! Liquid needs to be in the bag in the jug. (have tried!) Just pointing out incase you doing a wasted trip to Sainsburys0 -
I've not studied the jugs in any way, shape or form but presumably you can fix the hole in the spout? I'm guessing a bit of cling film and sellotape would work, unless it is far larger than I am imagining?0
-
Hi, have just tested jug with some water in (over sink!) and water pours out from where the milk bag is gripped into the jug (not a hole as I first imagined) I very much doubt you will be able to bodge up to stop leaking, unfortunatley
BUT if any one does come up with a fix, please share as my plastic jug is currently in the cupboard as buying milk at moment at 2/3rd price that Sainsburys are charging. The rate we get through milk in this house, although I love to re-cycle, I have to budget aswell

Just been to Sainsbury's Lincoln store. There's plenty still available for those who still want one.
There wasn't a sign in the store that said 'one per customer', so I took 2 as we have a larger family.0
