I live in Bradford and if I had the money and a job elsewhere I would move. It is a total dump with a huge crater in the middle of town (westfield shopping development which has been put on hold for the foreseeable future) We also have very few shops and infact we do most of our shopping in Leeds, Huddersfield and Halifax.
Holmewood is a council estate, the outskirts of it are not too bad but the center of the estate is terrrible, my other half lived on the estate for 11 years and I lived on and off on holmewood for 18 months with him and his parents until we moved into our own house.
Avoid at all costs
Oh dear, why does that not suprise me..
Very glad I'm out of there, I only live 25ish miles away in Castleford (which is nice enough).. I can tell you how much Bradford made me feel angry and annoyed constantly. The bad driving, the town centre, the atmosphere, the derelict building, and the high ethnic population just made me feel like such an outsider..really glad I don't have to go back..

thanks for your replies everyone..i think i'm going to look at other areas that are easy to commute from..i work by leeds train station so anywhere with a station would be very useful!! going to have a look at the wakefield area i think as there are some good local train stations there! i aslo like the look of shipley and there are some nice, cheaper properties!
Thanks everyone!0 -
As you can see from the reactions 'Bradford' isn't very popular but that's fine, it just means if it's got a BD postcode you could well end up with a bargain despite the fact it's in a nice area. Whereas having an LS postcode means it'll be inflated.
I'd say look for something on the Skipton to Leeds line. It's a pretty reliable line with Carlisle/Morecambe & Bradford trains also running along it, so you can change in Shipley if needed. I get home before people who live in Headingley.
I would never consider shopping in the centre of Bradford - it is a dump I'll agree with everyone there. But it's easy for me to get into Leeds, station is within walking distance and so are all the amenities and in 5 mins I can be on the moors so I love it here0 -
I live in Bradford, there are few places in the city itself that you would choose to live. City centre is worth looking at if you would consider an apartment, shops are rubbish but we have little crime (IIRC it is the safest city centre in the country). Little Germany is the nicest part with lots of professionals living in converted mills - transport links to Leeds are excellent from the city centre. Further out Saltaire is just gorgeous, some parts of Shipley are up and coming - again very good transport links to Leeds.

We live in Guiseley (not a million miles from Bradford) and it is very good for commuting. Direct trains to bradford (20 mins) leeds (12 mins) Ilkley (20 mins.)
It is a LS postcode though with an Ilkley phone number, although my OH who has lived here all his life reckons it used to be bradford.
Lots of our friends have moved to Bradford as it is just across the boarder which has a huge impact on house prices. Sister in law is in the process of buying a 2 bed, new stone flat, for £85000 in Apperley Bridge. She's thrilled with it as there's a train line due to be built in 2012.
Good friend has moved to a 2 bed terrace in greengates for 76K, again pleased with it. These areas aren't far from Rawdon, yeadon, guiseley, horsforth (all LS postcodes) but are so much cheaper.OPs so far £42,139

yeah she's been lucky, buying it off her friend's landlord who has over stretched himself and needs to free up cash quick, normally worth about £110K. Maybe 100K in present circumstances.OPs so far £42,139

We're in the process of buying in a location that is offically Bradford (council, but Leeds postcode). Various of the Bradford outskirts are lovely (e.g. Burley in Wharfedale, Ilkey, Addingham, etc). However, they're not cheap. We're paying nearlt 400k for a decent four bed detached, and it's realistic for the area.
Anywhere in a slightly dodgy area of Bradford will not be good, and in my opinion you'd be better looking at similar priced properties in Leeds - even some of the cheaper areas of Leeds can be reasonable, whereas I've yet to see a reasonably priced area of Bradford that is pleasant.
However, I'm pleased to be set right by someone who knows the more central areas of Bradford better?0 -
I live in Skipton and I love it here , very friendly has some lovely shops , a castle , the canal , lovely walks handy for the Dales and you can get some reasonably priced houses here I would recommend it to anyone .0
