Also, I think it does run in families but then I suppose it could be argued our children have learnt to be disorganised because we are!

That said dd1 is not at all like me or dd2 and their dad has very similar problems so it can't all be nuture!

    This is an interesting point.
I have spoken to several *experts* on this, and they are adamant there is no genetic link.
However, in my family, it is my sister and daughter who are considerably dyspraxic, and they do not see each other more than 4/5 times a year for a day or 2, so cannot really be learnt from sis to DD.

Dyspraxia has been linked to forceps assisted birth in the past. No idea if it was ever conclusivly proven though

That's interesting, DD1 was a forceps baby. But that was because she got stuck :o

I wonder if that relates to the previous name - Minimal Brain Damage.

My stepson has now been diagnosed as having Irlen syndrome (a sort of dyslexia where the words seem to disappear down a plug hole). He has a literacy level of 1a at school altho he is 10 and very short concentration span that we have seen.

He needs glasses with a turquoise filter apparently.., but they cost £300. His mother gets working tax credits (she's a school cook) and we are on benefits. Not sure how the glasses are going to be paid for as I also have a son with ASD .., so no spare money (I do budget stringently already).

Are there any funding sources we can look at?

Thank u very much indeed mspig. Apparently he's got to go to Maidstone now they've discovered he's got Irlens to find out exactly what shade of turquoise will work best for him. Then I'll hope we can find overlays of the right shade. I believe he will be given some for school work, but can't confirm that as yet. His mum has quite bad dyspraxia so it affects how organised she can be.., I'm getting the information peacemeal lol! At the moment she's saying the glasses cost £300 but I will look into that once we know exactly what he needs. They may be a little bit more reasonable. But the overlays will be very useful if we can't find a way to get the glasses. I would prefer to get the glasses as I assume if words disappear and dance around as u look at them, it must be quite distressing for everything, not just reading. I don't like to think of our stepson going thru that.

My daughter uses a double pink overlay for reading due to Irlens and only uses it if she is reading words on a white page. She can read perfectly well on the PC etc and is actually a whizz on the PC as she doesn't struggle to read it so it may be that he doesn't feel the effect with everything he sees.

On the birth problem thing most types of problems/conditions whatever you wish to call them: adhd, autism, dyspraxia and things like that have at one time or another been 'linked' with difficult births, (not just forceps) but any evidence has been inconclusive.

Yes when I first starting looking into dyspraxia I read on one wonderfully informative site that it was caused by brain damage and I must have done something while carrying my older son to cause the brain damage. Gave me quite a few nasty weeks but when I found other sites, they said there was no evidence of this, so I'm afraid u have to look at reported causes holding a large pinch of salt.., until something is actually proved by a reputable research project and then that has to be validated by further research.

If anyone is having problems with their child's needs not being met in school, have a look at Parent Partnership. If needed, a representative will come out to see you at home and assist in any meetings you have with school to help you be listened to and to negotiate with school in a constructive way.

(Having trouble with the link at the moment, I'll put one up later, but it's at the top if you google it.)
