    It was Arnold Clark.

Yes, everyone does want a pass but what I came here for was for other people's opinions on what I'd been told.

It's all well and good people saying och, it's o.k just forget it but that car is going on a 8-hour journey on Friday and to be perfectly frank, I'd like to make sure that my 2.5year old and my 1year old are in a safe car - especially as they said the brake shoe is dodgy.

Can't any of you understand why I'd ask for other people's opinions? As far as I'm concerned, it's not just about getting a pass, it's about the car being safe/legal to drive.

Why would random people on a website know if your car is safe though?

To be honestly blunt the opinions you are recieving are to all intents and purposes worthless, (no offence fellow posters), WE havent seen your car, but a fully qualified MOT tester HAS, and has passed it.

I'm not having a go, just dont understand what you're looking for here. :)

If the receptionists comments, which to me seem bizarre, have spooked you; get it retested.

I wouldn't, but it's up to you and only you if the bottom line is personal safety. :)

    Good luck.

From the MOT testers guide : The grooves of the tread pattern are not at least 1.6mm throughout a continuous band comprising: the central three-quarters of the breadth of tread, and
. round the entire outer circumference of the tyre

Note: Each side of the central band of the tyre can be devoid of tread (ie. ‘bald’) and still meet the pass.

Does it actually say the bit I have highlighted in the MOT testers guide? Because if it does, then it is wrong! Construction and use regulations state the above, plus they say that the remainder of the tread area must show a visible pattern. (I assume that they haven't changed considerably in the past few years...)

ANY bald patch on the tread area makes the tyre illegal.
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

    Explained above :D

I'll go get the form and tell you exactly what it says about the tyres.

Over here in Northern Ireland,MOT's are carried out by the DVLA at a regional test center, everything is computerised so if the car fails on anything, you get a print out of what needs done. And as they dont do any rectification, you can get the remedial work done at any garage.
If your car passes the MOT,along with your certificate, you get one of these to stick next to your tax disc:
    file.asp?ContentID=1280&file=c_23

It does say that in the MOT testers manual. The MOT test is not a full C&U test.
