I moved back two years ago and don't regret it at all. I believe it is the second biggest county in England. I'm nearer the coast and I do feel that sometimes the pace of life here is slower than the West Midlands. Yes it takes me longer to get to Devon and its sometimes quicker to go to places the longer way round via the M180. Surely the best thing is to visit it and see where you like.

    What about the wolds????

I live in Woodhall Spa which is inbetween Lincoln and Boston. It's what us younger people call "a waiting for god village" lots of retired folks.

It's a great area to live with lots to do but the main down side is travelling with poor public transport and a 45min drive till you hit a motorway.

If you have any other questions about round here please feel free to PM me.

I too live near Woodhall Spa about 10 miles away. I think this area suits lots of requirements. There is lovely countryside, not far to Lincoln and only an hour or so to the coast. Only slight downside to Woodhall itself is it gets full of tourists!! It is only just over an hour to Nottingham and its motorway links, East Midlands airport etc. Bourne is another area I personally like but when we were looking to move here many of the villages nearby no longer had any shops, schools etc. The village i live in is certainly not a pretty village unlike so many others, but it suits us. I was amazed the day we moved in to have both neighbours come round for a quick hello each bearing a welcome card and a bunch of flowers!! Children play out quite happily, teenagers smile at you and there are clubs and societies for all sorts in the area. Horncastle which is quite near has excellent schools and loads of antique shops.

Hope your visit goes well and you decide to relocate.
Good luck to all who enter competitions.

I lived in a couple of places round there a few years ago.

A car is ESSENTIAL for living anywhere except the very centre of Lincoln. There are, however, some very cruel speed limit/camera combinations (50 mile an hour dual carriageways in the middle of nowhere covered in average speed cameras, for example). The road network in the North (near m180) is excellent, in Lincolnshire proper its appaulling (although will be better when the A1 upgrades are finally finished). You will spend hours behind tractors and lorries. Trains aren't even worth mentioning, and the bus routes are laughable, I lived one place where the bus ran into Lincoln - twice a week.

Employment is fairly easy to come by if you want unskilled minimum wage work or are extremely qualified and looking for high wage work, but very little outside the care industry and agricultural industry in between.

Boston, Gainsborough and S!!!!horpe are some of the most depressing, boring towns you will ever visit, but the smaller market towns like Market Rasen, Brigg and Caistor are really quite pleasant.

Oh, and look out for Hemswell Market (bargains galore) and Brandy Wharf (cider galore). And don't bother with the Lincolnshire show, its awful.

Lovely place to live, like many above have said, not good on the public transport front in lots of villages. There are buses, but not many, so it's difficult to get to to work without a car.

Employment isn't easy to come by in the coastal parts, plenty in summer, but a heaving job centre out of season.

Very pretty, and if you go to car boot sales and farmer shops, you can nearly always get cheap fruit and veg that's just delicious.
  • I grew up in Horncastle and although at the time it felt pretty insular, 10 years on after living in Edinburgh, Aberdeen and London, I really look forward to going back to visit my Mum. It really can be quite unspoilt and people are very down to earth with an expectation to just be happy with their lot rather than huge monetary ambition. The villages on the edge of the Wolds (Tetford, Belchford, Tathwell...) are really pretty and still have fantastic community spirit - soap box car racing, village fetes, scarecrow competitions etc. Genuine for fun rather than profit stuff (never happens in London!). The natives can be slightly feudal and a little bit hostile (my Mum reckoned she's only just been accepted after 25 years of living there!) but there's more of a mix of people now to liven the place up.

The schools are great as long as your kids take the 11+ and pass it! I went to the grammar in Horncastle and in retrospect I couldn't have asked for a better education. One day I hope to return to provide the same for my kids!

    Good luck finding somewhere!

Live about 10 miles out from Lincoln city, we moved here 4 1/2 years ago, we love it, you DO need a car, the small town markets are very nice, the fresh farm produce (meat and veg) cannot be beaten, we have 2 spot on farm shops close by (Pink Pig organic shop near Scunny and Sunny Side up near Market Rasen) that are brilliant for meat.
We are very remote and that really is the best part of it.
I would like to live in Theory, because everything works there
  • i live in Tetford, it is very pretty. We tend to make out own entertainment in the village so you get out what you put in,(this weekend quiz friday night, dinner party sat (murder mystery) sunday at friends watching football and bbq. we have a bus service in the village that my children use and a shop.
i would rent first before buying as villages are very different.
we have indian delivery to the village hurray (no pizza). if you enjoy walking come to the wolds to stay, terrier racing friday evening 16th July in tetford.

No one so far has mentioned Louth which is a Georgian market town on the edge of the Lincs wolds: lots of nice trad foodie shops and farmers market etc as well as Co-Op & Morrisons stores .15 miles to Grimsby- Tesco, Sainsburys Asda if you want large supermarkets. Lots of things going on: cinema, live music (choral, folk, trad jazz)new leisure centre, 3 secondary schools, 4 primaries..... 15 miles to coast- wonderful huge almost deserted sandy beaches perfect for running the dogs. Just had a Wolds walking festival, a music festival starts this weekend and there's a literary festival in autumn. BUT you NEED a car. Buses are limited and 12 miles to nearest station also not so good to get to motorways but generally the roads aren't too busy. Suggest you get yourself a free county guide book (from your local tourist office) and just meander around to start with. As far as flat land ie the Fens are concerned, most of Cambridgeshire is flat as a pancake!!
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!
