Hi there, I have a laptop which now refuses to go into windows. It does a startup repair, fails then restarts. I am given problem Signature 01: Autofailover 02: 6.0.6001.18000.0.0.0.0 03: 0 04: 65536 This is quite strange, I do not appear to be able to get to safe mode, trying to run windows memory diagnostics tool, fails.…

To be honest, whenever I've tried replacing files to fix non-booting PCs it's never worked - there's usually much more wrong. If you can't see the files in Ubuntu, my guess is that the partition table has been damaged.

RE: the recovery partition you mentioned, when you press F8 to get the boot options, isn't there any recovery options in there? Might be worth contacting the Laptop manufacturer to see how you're meant to restore from the recovery partition.
