Big Problems

Options
Hi there, I have a laptop which now refuses to go into windows. It does a startup repair, fails then restarts. I am given problem Signature
01: Autofailover
02: 6.0.6001.18000.0.0.0.0
03: 0
04: 65536

This is quite strange, I do not appear to be able to get to safe mode, trying to run windows memory diagnostics tool, fails.

There is a lot of valuable music on there which the owner would like off if possible. would Ubuntu give me the option to boot from disk and move these files to an external harddrive.
They have made no back up so I cannot restore to a previous good config.

Any advise would be most appreciated.

Yes, try using an Ubuntu disc - you can run it completely from disc so it doesn't need to be installed. If the hard drive is ok, you will be able to copy the data off.

Failing that, I usually take the hard drive out and put it into a USB caddy and connect it to my PC to copy the data off.

I haven't seen that error before but I'd definately copy the data off before you try to fix it, it's usually quicker and easier to wipe the disc and reinstall Windows that fix these types of errors anyway.

Try using the Vista Recovery Disc in the first instance.

Thanks, hopefully this will help me out. I'm not sure if my friend has a vista disk.

I have tried using the vista recovery disc but with no joy. It still keeps bringing me back to the system recovery screen and as windows looks for problems it says it can not find anything and then restarts. Any more ideas? I'm still waiting for ubuntu to download at the moment.

slight update, it has a recovery partition but I can not seem to do anything with it. I have ubuntu up and running, this is working fine. Any ideas on the recovery? Thanks

Ubuntu may not help to run the recovery. Recovery, a complete reinstall to factory fresh state, losing all personal date, works in to ways. Either from a setting in the computers BIOS or from a set of pre-made recovery DVD's.

The other option would be Ubuntu see's the recovery partition and runs any files there.

Which of the System Recovery options have you tried? They don't need to have made backups for you to use System Restore. http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/window-on-windows/?p=622

Run ChkDsc from a Command Prompt: chkdsk C: /f

Ok I have tried running the system recovery disk, It runs me through all the options but when it attempts to start I get Winsetup.dll is missing. I tried both the 32bit and 64bit as I am unsure what is on the computer. I am currently running a Memtest86 to see if this finds anything but I'm guessing windows is corrupt and without an installation disk Ubuntu it is?

Doesn't sound very promising to me. If you've got access to another Windows machine, I'd suggest getting a USB caddy off of eBay and putting the hard drive in there and running some recovery software such as R-Studio. It probably won't fix the Windows installation but hopefully it will recover the files you want to keep.

You will need the Windows disc to reinstall Windows - again I'd suggest looking on eBay, but if you like the look of Ubuntu I'd highly recommend giving it a try. It's completely free and once you get used to it, it's a great OS.

do you not think there would be any way of obtaining this winsetup.dll file from somewhere? I'm a bit sceptical with the websites that claim to give me the option to download it as I would expect viruses.
