Winter tyres in summer...

Options
I am the owner of a clio grande 1.2 and I would like to wear winter tyres all year round.
During the winter, here in nottinghamshire, is not infrequent to find very bad road conditions in the morning, and my all year round tyres are a bit old.
So I was thinking about replacing them all with winter ones.
will it cause any problem?
Beside this, does anyone know of a good tyre shoppe in nottingham or around? Part-worn tyres as well!

Thanks

Vredestein sell the Quatrac 3 which is an all season tyre. Check online at blackcircles.co.uk and etyres.co.uk for guide to pricing.

Do you come from a bygone era?

Seriously, there may be some trade off in terms of braking performance and increased wear if using winter tyres all year round but not much it appears. Good article on the Autocar web site:

How much more expensive are winter tyres anyway?

My experience of winter tyres (admittedly on a family members car, rather than my own) is that they are quite substantially noisier than normal tyres.

As an aside, I'm sure I've spelt noisier wrong, but dont have a spell checker to hand and noiseier looks even wronger :rotfl:

Not sure where you are but I recommend Frank Watts at Sutton in Ashfield. An independant, with the owner usually answering the phone and very helpfull.

I wanted some tyres for my daughter who was down from North Yorkshire in Decemebr and wanted 2 tyres for the front that would be good in the snow. Frank Watts recommended some rain tyres (forgot the make) that have been ideal during the winter, and she never had a problem travelling from the hills into Harrogate in her Focus. They are not noticeably noiser.

My impreza came from Japan with winter tyres on.

They were very bad in damp conditions due to the reduced surface area but I suppose it really depends on how extreme the tyres are.

I run with winter/all season tyres all year round. Look for ones with the snowflake symbol for tyres which really do work in the snow. Ignore the M&S (Mud and snow) marker - that doesn't mean very much.

I suppose it depends where you live but in Essex I cant see any point in changing tyres for different seasons. The seasons are so ill defined I would be for ever swapping them about. I presume if you fit winter tyres you need another set of wheels? Where does one put the ones one is not using?

Contrary to popular belief that they are only good for snow, winter tyres are actually better than all season or summer tyres in temperatures up to 7 degrees C, and perform well in the wet. All-season tyres aren't the greatest, they don't do either end of the scale very well.

I ran a set of Avon winter tyres all year round for a couple of years, they were of course amazing in the snow and colder weather and still had heaps of tread left when I sold it :)

So is there a significant price difference between summer and winter tyres?
