Remove the battery completely and boot on mains power. If that doesn't work, boot again in safe mode by holding down F8 at boot, if that doesn't work boot into the bios and post back results. If you can hold a key down and get into the bios, it's probably a software problem

What make of laptop is it, are you XP or Vista?
    Maybe re-install the keyboard drivers.

  • its xp - checked the drivers, there was a yellow exclamation mark, so reinstalled, rebboted, still not working, checked device manager again, no yellow mark but still not working
  • right - process of elimination - keyboard working in bios - so not disconnected internally - wouldn't system restore to an earlier date so finally reinstalled the whole thing, 1st time tried the reinstallation not losing the files, still wouldn't work, so just went back & did a complete fresh start & the keyboard is now working - thanx to everyone for their input & advice xx

It might be a good idea to set a system restore point at this time ;)
