my sons laptop has suddenly developed a problem, the machine loads up ok, wireless confirmed as excellent but all of a sudden the keyboard & touch pad are not working, when you connect the mouse, it works but no keyboard, checked the obvious in that the num lock was not on but can't figure out the problem
His machine was playing up so from advice on here I performed some housekeeping, loaded & ran CCleaner, anti spyware, malware & anti virus programmes, it then worked fine but when he turned it back on yesterday morning no keyboard
any ideas??

yes just tried it on reboot - wot does this mean?0 -
Press these three buttons (at the same time)
Alt-Ctrl-fn.......hopefully that will solve it.
If not...shut down the laptop. Remove the battery. Replace the battery. Restart your laptop.
If not post back, there are a few other things to try ( slightly more complicated!!)Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those affected (Benjamin Franklin) JFT96...YNWA0 -
It sounds like the ribbon (connects keyboard n pad to laptop) has dislodged - its easy to fix, but if its under warranty I suggest you take it in for a repair..

Try this solution - from a similar issue -The laptop is a whopping 6 months old, and I never had any indication that the battery might be going out, or that anything at all was wrong with it. Just woke up yesterday morning and tried to use it, and the touchpad and keyboard wouldn't respond at all.
I used a usb mouse, and the on screen keyboard to log in to the laptop to kind of poke around to see what could be causing the problem, when lo and behold, in the device manager, six or seven devices had little exclamations next to them. Every single item said "Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)."
I had windows vista try to update the drivers, thinking that for whatever reason, they had gone bad.
Nothing.
I tried disabling them, and reenabling them.
Nothing.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the devices.
Nothing.
Finally, I struck upon the idea that maybe a recent system update had bumfuzzled my machine. So I did a system restore to just before the system update that my laptop recieved the night before.

It WORKS!:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

didn't work, unfortunately - the laptop is a few years old but was rarely used by my F-in-Law, who preferred his desktop - my son inherited it at Christmas, so only 5 months constant use so far0 -

Hi,
are you on XP or Vista?
Before you do a restore, can you get into control panel and have a look into device manager, and see what it says about keyboard?0 -
first see if this is a hw or software problem
what Id do is this
1/ reboot and try and go into the bios see if I can use the keyboard in there. if its not working at this point then the system is not seeing it and you either have a faulty connection keybord or mother board (easy fix)
2/ if working in bios you could then boot off a linux boot cd like knoppix if works there then def software issue
3/ if software plug a usb (or ps2 if older lappy ) and see if thats picked up by your OS and see if you can fix the prob if not re image your system from back up that im sure you have0
