Watering the garden

A couple of questions if I may.

1. I need a new hosepipe and attachments and there is such a variety in the shops, I'm completely confused ! I've seen flat ones, cheap round ones, toughened ones, some on a reel etc etc.

Can anyone recommend one from personal experience please, in all price ranges. Also what sort of attachments should I get (if any) - I don't plan to have hanging baskets. I don't want one of those irrigation systems.

2. My brother in law fitted me a tap just inside my garage so I could water the front garden without running the hose all the way through to the tap at the back. Trouble is he "plumbed" it into the pipe that feeds the washing machine (he couldn't work out how to plumb it into the water tank which is on the other side of the house.) So, the water pressure from the tap is not very strong and water only trickles out of the hose pipe. Is there anything I can do to increase the water pressure (e.g. a pump) without paying for a major plumbing job ?

(Sorry Q2 is a bit wordy but I hope it makes sense).

Thanks

Linda xx

    1. The flat ones are good at space saving but are less good with low water pressure (as the water has to force its way through the collapsed pipe) This may be a consideration if you can't resolve part 2. In the end they will all eventually perish and split but if you get the reinforced ones they last longer. Most of the attachments are standard even if made by different makers.

    2. sounds a bit odd to me. I would if possible take the washing machine connection off and see if that is low pressure too. Check that all the taps and valves are fully open. Was it properly pumbed in or one of these self tapping kits where you clamp it on the pipe and screw it up so it pierces the pipe - it may not have made a big enough hole. You ideally want it running off the mains to get mains pressure - if you take it off the tank you only get the pressure from the gravity effect.

I would say get the best hosepipe you can afford, I tried a few cheap kits and they either leaked after a few months or kinked very easily making use of them a pain.

I noted that Homebase where doing a deal on 50m Hoselock kits with accessories.

You can get boast pumps but there not cheap to say the least looking around £200 mark for the cheapest ones.

Personally I would lay down soaker pipes around your plants, If pots buy a drip irrigation system. Plug in hose wait for half an hour and switch off(monitoring the moisture content as to not drown any plants) Much more water efficient than a hose and better for your plants as it allows the moisture to seep deeper into the ground.

Your cold water tank won't give you much pressure and it'll just be supplying the hot water tank and taps.

The washing machine taps only cut a small hole in the pipe.

Get a proper T piece fitted into the main cold water pipe.

Can get metal or plastic ones, Turn off the main water.

Cut the pipe then remove approx 1cm from either end, Slide the T piece on and do teh connectors up finger tight. Align the T piece to point the way you want it then tighten using spanners or a wrench, A 3rd hand might be useful to stop teh T piece twisting.

Insert the pipe from the outside tap & tighten that.

    Done.

Only issue i had was sitting under the sink with a junior hacksaw and limited space, But the tap is only inches away from the main water feed.
Stocpcock under the sink and another in the garage.

  • Hi

A few years ago I bought some new hoses for the back garden and thought that I would buy very cheap as that was all the budget I had. The old addage that you get what you pay for is oh so true as I have just had to replace 2 of them. This year I did some research and even though I couldnt afford the mega expensive hozelock re-inforced triple layer hoses I managed to find a middle of the road quality hose. If memory serves it was a mega hose that I bought. Now saving for a new reel so that I dont keep tripping over the ruddy snake of a thing!

I bought it from this place Irrigation Uk on the tinternet

What I also impressed me was the customer service and also the fact that they didnt try to sell me the most expensive thing they had. They seemed to understand working to a budget.

Or you could just put the pipe where you want it to water and turn it on for longer.

Hi V_P and thanks for that :T. I've got a 15% discount coupon for Homebase this weekend so might try there first. What you don't say but I assume is true, is that the new hose works well and does not kink even when "going round corners" ?.

I bought a cheap hoselock one and got right on my nerves, so bought a ultra pro one from hoselock clearance store online for £25 and bought a good attachment on ebay for £5 and now got a good hose and spray.
    Kind Regards
