Techie help for my PC please!!

Okay so I'm clueless when it comes to techie computer stuff but I'm sure my computer isn't running right. The main problem seems to be that it's pretty slow lately but also when I try to close windows, say if I've been on Facebook or Hotmail it won't close and says Not Responding. Then another box comes up and I click End Now. This is happening regularly and it's driving me mad!!

At the moment I have a trial version of AVG which expires today and I want to try and get my pc problems sorted out and also see what protection people recommend I get for my computer to replace AVG. I want something that will be fairly straightforward for a technophobe like me to use!! Can anyone help please?

Good morning

Usually when this slowdown occurs the only real way to fix the problem would be to re-install windows, removing programs can help but you will still have some form of slowdown. Just curious but how much ram does your PC have?, this can be quite a factor in these sorts of problems as well. Defragging may also help.

I have no idea how much ram space my computer has!! How do I defragment it?

If you right click on my computer, goto properties it will tell you in there the ammount of RAM. To defragment go into my computer, right click on C:, and in the tools tab click defragment

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')

Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM FULL SCAN then click SCAN
Remove everything thats found (needs to be ticked)
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

Two points jump out, firstly AVG is free for home use, you have somehow got the professional/paid for version which they let you use free for 30 days rather than the non-professional version thats free forever.

The other point is AVG is pretty much junk these days and about as effective as a wet paper bag at keeping your PC safe from viruses (do a quick forum search here), get yourself a reliable 'free' antivirus, whichever you choose this time download the non-professional version rather than the paid for version.

Commonly recommended ones are 'Avira', 'Avast' or 'Microsoft Security Essentials'

Personally I recommend the Microsoft one


you should also follow alienriks suggestions above to clean any viruses you've picked up while using on AVG

Download and run CCleaner and also get rid of AVG as JasX suggests. It's really no good these days, Avast! is a good free alternative. You might find your machine has viruses on it causing problems that AVG simply hasn't picked up on.
CCleaner can work wonders sometimes, particularly if part of the problem is to do with disk space. You might find you have a huge number of temporary internet files you didn't even know existed taking up space on your drive and leaving very little room for the swap file which, without going into detail, works similar to having extra memory available.
