I have 512MB of RAM. Now that I've done the two scans should I install some sort of protection? Should I stick with a free version or is it better to buy one?

Nothing wrong with sticking with a free one but use a good one like Avast!
AVG just isn't up to scratch these days and it's a shame because it was good in the past.

Cut back on the Toolbars and the programs running at Startup or just buy more RAM, another 512MB should do.

Id definitely buy more RAM. 1 gig would make quite a difference

Id use the removal tool for AVG ~
    http://www.avg.com/download-tools

and install AVIRA in its place
Id also use MALWAREBYTES as a secondary scanner

  • Have a look at http://www.jargonfreehelp.com/episode.asp?video_id=speeding_up_computer there are some simple things you can do to speed up your computer.

There is also a video there about adding RAM, although they don't tell you how to work out what RAM you need but you can go to https://www.crucial.com/uk and there is a tool there to tell you what RAM you need and if you have space to add any. It will then point to the RAM you need to purchase.
