I currently have a problem with my eyesight and find the display of my Dell Ultrasharp Monitor much too bright - even painful - especially anything white.

I haven't so far been able to find out how to reduce the brightness - or even change the white background to something else.

Can anybody help?

If it is the same as mine, use the front ( left ) buttons to adjust via the menu.

    Thanks Inactive and aliEnRIK

I have made some progress having found
    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/1704fpt/en/about.htm

I have found the menu and can get into Brightness [100] or Contrast [50], but haven't yet worked out how to alter those settings :o

Edit: I have now managed to reduce the brightness setting without any change, so perhaps I need to reduce the contrast as well.

Brightness is actually to set blacks. Contrast is to set whites

I use these to calibrate them ~

(If its not calibrated, then your missing part of the picture or blacks will look grey)

I have just checked my Dell Monitor, the contrast cannot be altered in the menu for some reason, it is there, but greyed out.

Just had a quick search, and on some Dell monitors the contrast (and some other settings) are diabled when using the DVI connection, but you should be able to change them via the driver software on your PC.

Other workarounds are to use the VGA connection instead or (according to one post I saw) try a lower resolution(?!).

    Hope this helps...

Glad to say that I was able to reduce the contrast, which did the trick for the time being.

Thanks aliEnRIK for those calibration sites - a quick look shows that I have many invisible 'squares'. I will have to experiment to see how the display changes.

    Good call

I found this as a possible workaround? ~

Go into settings, then advanced. Go to the Color tab,
there you can change brightness and contrast.

If that doesnt work then set 'red green and blue' manually and simply lower the settings equally (Thats my own thought)

Another thought on this, I have an NVidea Graphics Card, it came with software to allow monitor settings, it has both a contrast and brightness adjustment.

Not sure if this may help the OP.;)
