Talk Talk problems

Has anyone latched on to the fact that this new Talk Talk broadband just doesn't work!

I have 3 friends who have forked out £30 set up fee and no one not even computer literate experts can get the damn thing to work!

Also all emails requesting help are ignored plus telephone call going higher & higher into the hierarchy of the company make promises to call back and don't.

It appears to be something of a con especially as an article in the Telegraph claim that two thirds of Talk Talk broadband customers have no service - the phone works but not the broadband. That apparently works out to about 250,000 customers - that's £7.5 million they have got for free!

Ironically, one of my friends choose the service for the free phone calls - he got his phone bill from Talk Talk which showed £30 for the set-up fee and then nearly £5 owing for "free calls" - these were all calls to Talk Talk's helpline trying to get the broadband working.

What concerns me, is that if there is such a problem why hasn't there been a uproar in the press? Is someone getting back-handers??

Welcome to the MSE forums nosmo_king.

I have to admit that, having read many and various tales of woe about TT on this and other forums, I am surprised too.

Indeed, I am surprised that so many people are still signing up.

Perhaps it's just that satisfied customers won't bother posting so the only posts about TT are from those who are dissatisfied.

Although Martin is still including a link (with an asterisk) to TT's BB offer site in his weekly e-mails, I think I'll give them a miss for now.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I've set up 6 people now with TalkTalk, so far with no major problems & the one time I did have to phone their technical support line (which I'm sure was a freephone number?) they were very prompt & very helpful (though this was over a month ago - maybe things have changed). I'm doing another one tomorrow as it happens - shall let you know how it goes...

Carphonewarehouse/TalkTalk/Fresh haven't done freephone numbers for ages now and it was then only when ringing their sales line. All departments now use low-premium rate 0870 numbers costing 8ppm (daytime) except for technical support which is an 0871 costing 10ppm all the time with a connection fee of 10p or 15p as well.

I've been connected to TalkTalk Broadband for 2 weeks now, and have encountered no problems with the quick connection, so I'm very pleased!!
I signed up for Broadband in May & had to wait 3 months to go live. However, I am abit peeved that joining then, we had to go onto Talk 3 International, whereas now, as Martin has explained, due to Trading Standards, Broadband is now offered on Talk 3, which is £1 cheaper per month!!
The biggest problems have been no Installation CD included with my modem, and getting through to Customer Services!!
The modem did arrive in good time before my go live date, though!!
After, eventually getting through to Customer Services, after many attempts, I've been told that one will be sent out to me - I've requested the CD twice now, but have still to receive it!!
However, I went into my local Carphone Warehouse shop & explained my problem, & the manager lent me his own copy of the CD in order for me to get started. I think that's full marks to him!! I wonder if the store managers have been asked to do this, to help relieve problems with the absence of the Installation CD's!!
As regards the phone calls to TalkTalk, I have not been charged, as it states on your bill that calls to TalkTalk are free from a TalkTalk landline. You do have to pay 10p per minute, however, if you have to call Technical Support. If you have been charged for the free calls, then I suggest that you call Customer Services - if you can actually get through to speak to someone!!
On the whole, it is worth the wait!! The enormous demand has obviously really overstretched them, and there are bound to be teething problems!! Free phone calls & a quick connection broadband for only £9.99 - £8.99 for new subscribers, is pretty good!!

Learn from the mistakes of others - you won't live long enough to make them all yourself.

My experience was that although the CD came, it failed to fulfill. Customer services told me that some were faulty but installation was then done manually. I would however like to PM with someone that has recently joined TT as I would like to ask a couple of questions about daily connection routine.

Calling the TT 0870 number is free on a TT line. As for the premium rate support line, there is a free number for use in the first 30 days of service, I've been with them about 3 years now and I used it a couple of months back and just pressed the button to say I'd been with them less than 30 days and no questions were asked! Unfortunately I no longer have this number to hand.

As for satisfied customers, I am and Mum and her friend have just switched over too.

My broadband went active nearly two months early.

My broadband has been very good, and has been quicker than my Nildram connection I switched from.

Additionally there is an 0800 number for TalkTalk.

If you need tech support call on the usual customer service freephone number....i think it's 0870 444 1820.....selecting BB when prompted.....you get through to the same people that answer the BB tech support line.

That doesn't sound like a freephone number to me.

TT say its free if you phone from your landline number thats registered with them.
If you don't have something nice to say don't bother saying anything at all.
