Using the information given here
http://www.microsoft.com/canada/home/productivity-and-planning/articles/spring-clean-your-computer-system.aspx
Firstly, is this good information?
Secondly, I have a HUGE amount of programs on my computer that I don't seem to use, is it really wise to get rid of them, I don't even know what some of them do.
I'm trying to sort my laptop myself as I've recently been quoted £40-£60 for someone to come out and do this for me  seem to be a lot of money so any help would be appreciated :A

Good on you for doing it yourself.
I would say that is all good advice.
However there is nothing as good as formatting the PC and starting from fresh. This can be time consuming and would mean losing all your programs and settings so not always feasible.
The webiste advice is good and should make a little difference if followed.
If you can increase the memory too then that would make a big difference but cost you (£30 max).
State the laptop make and model if you want more help on the memory.0 -
Re install windows (Windows 7 is out now)
T'is the only way and fastest Win 7 20 - 30 mins.0 -
Whats wrong with it? Slow? What operating system, model, ram?!!
> . !!!! ----> .0 -
First, figure out what you want to use, and what you want to keep on your laptop, both in terms of the programs you use, and the data you have.
Second, for the programs you DO want to use, establish if you have install discs for them all, including your operating system (if you want to keep the same OS)
If you have the £40 - £60 to spend, you could consider taking the HDD out of the laptop, and buying a new one to install. Put the old one in a USB caddy and keep it to one side. It has all your data.
Install the new HDD, and, asuming you have that OS install disc referred to earlier, re-install your OS on the new drive. Re-install the programs you want to use, and connect the old drive, now in the USB caddy. Copy any data you need from the USB caddy back to the internal HDD, and use the external drive as a backup location.0 -
What operating system, model, ram?
Haha, I get this question everytime I post on this board and the truth is......I don't know! It's a Sony Vaio laptop, model VGN-NR-32L, on windows vista, memory says "2gb/Go DDR2 SDRAM" if that makes any sense (cos it doesn't to me).
Yes the problem pretty much is that it's slow, and I sort it out but then after a few weeks its back to square one, I use Norton antivirus, malware bytes anti-malware and C-cleaner.
Can I ask what a huge bunch of programs do so I know whether I can remove them or not?!!? The first one would be Java.Sometimes you have to go throughthe rain to get to therainbow0 -
Javas required for lots of internet pages and some programs use it too so I wouldnt recommend it
Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD THIS VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/2894/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log):idea:0 -
Quickest way is to backup your data, and reinstall to factory settings using the recovery partition. Software in itself doesn't slow it down, unless it is running at startup!!

To be fair, apart from all the sony software that running, theres not much to get rid of
I sure as hell wouldnt pay someone to do anything if I was in your shoes
Removing installed programs isnt going to make any difference to the speed (Aside from maybe sony ones):idea:0 -
But removing most of the BHOs and stopping some of those programs from starting up with Windows will.
I'm sure Rik, when he finds more time, can take another look and advise you what you can disable/remove.0
