been looking at the skinners web page and there range looks like a good and sensibly priced so might try getting some of it as it seems to be a more natural alternative to the like of beta and is the same price
I'm thinking of changing my dogs food and have been looking at a lot of dog foods and ingredients lately .......so am starting to really understand the difference between them!
Imho I would say that skinners looks a lot better than Beta mainly because their products contain meat "meal" which is basically ground up meat and bones which are good for the dog eg the Duck and rice that Rev mentions contains 20% Duck Meal compared to Beta which contains Meat and animal derivatives (min. 14% meats, min. 4% chicken) "animal derivatives" are basically any part of any animal ie. feet, guts or any other nasties
But also the quantities that you are advised to feed, as an example the feeding guide for my dog is:
Skinners up to a 10k Dog up to 125g of food
http://www.skinnerspetfoods.co.uk/alt/Feeding-Guide/
and
Beta for a 5-12kg dog 110-200g
http://www.purina-beta.co.uk/products/adultcr_info.aspx
So you would need to feed quite a bit more of the Beta too so it would work out more expensive even though they are a similar price to buy.0 -
when i rescued my little one in Dec he was on Wagg.
I then got him some James Wellbeloved thinking a better quality food would be preferable.
He wont touch it, he did for a bit but has since become very fussy
he's now eating beta after trying some of a friends dogs.
he likes it but i am stil struggling to get him to eat, he needs encouragement etc
i wonder if i have just gotten him out of routine?0 -

I've seen a lot of people saying their dog wont touch James Well beloved since they were taken over by Masterfoods (same people who make bakers and pedigree etc). They have apparently changed some stuff around, and by all accounts it aint what it used to be.
If you want to keep him on JWB try mixing in a little bit of wet food, naturediet, naturesmenu, weinwrights wet etc and coat the biscuits with that. That's what I have to do with mine. If you'd rather change have a look at Arden Grange, cheaper than JWB and IMHO better quality.Sigless0 -

Oh, never spotted that. Skiners must have changed the feeding guide, I have a bag of duck and rice here an it says to feed 100g per 8kg of the dogs weights.Sigless0 -

Imho, I dont think you can buy better than chappie dry. My vet recomends it and pound for pound it is the best value for money. Also my dog loves it and has thrived since changing to it.0

We feed our dog Autarky, it's quite cheap and she seems to be doing well on it.0

Please don't take this as a slight on you, it's not at all, your dog is happy and doing well, I'm sure, that's the main thing. I just get shocked sometimes that companies put biscuits in a bag, charge for them and label them dog food.:mad:Chappie dry ingredients
Cereals (minimum 4% wholegrain); Derivitives of vegetable origin; meat and animal derivitives (minimum 4% chicken); oils and fats; minerals. With antioxidants butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA). With preservative potassium sorbate.
Seriously? That's beyond a joke.
Dervivatives of vegetable origin? What the hell is that? Meat and derivatives are the third listed ingredients, and since it says derivatives it really could be anything. Feet, beaks, anything. So, your vet recommends, for an animal who needs meat for its energy (the dogs digestive system will convert grain and such into glucose) a food which has about 2% actual meat in it. I'm speechless. If it were me, I'd be changing vet asap.
It even says on the advertisement that is uses wholegrain cereals to ensure maximum nourishment, which is great, only thing is dogs don't need those and can't digest them properly.
Okay, I'm gonna shut up, I'm starting to bore myself with it, god knows how everyone else feels.
P.S. Chappie wet is, oddly often recommended for dogs with upset tummies, not sure why it works, the ingredients are crap, but it does work and I always keep a tin in just in case one of mine gets an upset tummy.Sigless0 -
My pup has recently went off her JWB, she's only 6 months and I've tried different flavours. I'm not really happy changing her food so young but like I might have to and was wondering what else is out there for pups?0
