    Congratulations olly!!

Glad to see that it's entirely possible. I'm going through write up hell at the moment.
  • Thanks guys!

I'm still keeping going, the good thing though is that my husband handed in his thesis (for the second time) on Monday, now just the second viva to get through, but life will be so less stressfull with only one of us writing up/working on a phd. At least I won't be doing all the cooking/housework/shopping and supporting.

    Congratulations Olly!!

Hope everyone is getting on well. You guys (Heth, MissCool) seem to be quite far in, or rather near the end of the PhD. Well done! I am just starting and even getting the upgrade is starting to concern me as I just don´t feel like I am doing enough work! The other newbie PhDs have gone quiet so I suspect they are working really hard. Anyway I didn´t come to moan I actually wanted to ask a question:

Do you share your work with people in other universities before you have published it? I am working on a foreign writer and have met someone in a foreign university that is studying the same person. I would like to send her my work but part of me worries that she will just translate it and publish it! I guess this is an unreasonable fear and sharing is part of the process. I mentioned it to my supervisor and she seemed to suggest I should just share. At the moment I am thinking of sharing some of it but keeping the best bits to myself... !

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks hostie!

I think you should tread carefully. Start small and build some trust, but make sure you are getting something back.

Be careful (this sounds terrible!) but if you don't personally know this person, aside from studying the same person you have no idea about how far they would go to publish.

Share small, suggest collaboration and see what she does in return. If she's a senior person, might be worth keeping her in mind for exams and stuff (or just free peer review!!)

    Dear Misskool and Olly,
I wish I had waited for your advice but I went ahead and sent her my work anyway. Hopefully it will work out ok this time but on reflection I wish I hadn´t sent her so much. In future I will be more careful. Hopefully though this time it will work out well and we can both help each other a lot.
Thanks for your advice. I will heed it for next time!

  • Just popped onto this thread and its reassuring to see that I'm not the only one wondering what I've done!

I've just started - or not as the case may be - my PhD in history after doing the BA and then MA as a mature student (31). I started in October but since then haven't been able to get motivated to do anything. On one hand it seems that there is so much to do that I don't know where to begin. On the other, is the sort of 'I'll start it after Christmas' mentality that comes with knowing that you've got three years. There is always something more pressing to do too. I'm annoyed because I loved doing my work for the other quals, but now seem to have become a bit jaded.

I've got my question(s) sorted, have got some sources already and have had a few meetings with the supervisor so I suppose I've made some progress. Somebody warned me that the PhD could be lonely, but I never believed it until now!

Hello, just want to say hi and maybe join this little group of long-essay doctors (as my wife calls it, to distinguish me from proper doctors...)

Finished a PhD in 1999 (having started in 1993!) and share most of the emotions/experiences on here.

    Best of luck to everyone
