This is one of the things that is wrong with the United Kingdom . . . it's not united!
Why are Banks outside England and Wales allowed to issue their own Bank Notes?
Why the hell not? We are a separate country.:T You said it yourself we are not a united kingdom. :rotfl: Please don't get me wrong I don't want Scotland to become a republic, as a royalist I want to keep my Queen.0 -
IOM notes can be exchanged in Scottish banks on a £ for £ basis. My father lived in the IOM for many years & on return from visiting I often had IOM notes left. I usually just kept them for next time, but when my father died & I had no need to return my bank (RBS) happily allowed me to exchange them. They also did the same last week with an Irish note. Sorry state if shops don't accept all sterling notes on this basis.Approach her; adore her. Behold her; worship her. Caress her; indulge her. Kiss her; pleasure her. Kneel to her; lavish her. Assert to her; let her guide you. Obey her as you know how; Surrender is so wonderful! For Caroline my Goddess.0

Off course they can in banks as I stated, but it was shops we was discussing. The reason the BoE refuse to accept it as legal tender for general shopping in the Uk is because the picture of the queen does not have a crown on it as Tynwald (our parliament) refused to put it on due to her only holding the title of Lord of Mann here and her not being recognised as Queen. Little bit of trivia for you, The Manx £5 note is the only bank note in the world known to have a pub on it.
I was basically agreeing with you. I did say it's a sorry state that shops don't accept the notes as exchanging them at the bank is no problem at all0 -

Sadly, the refusal to accept Scots or Irish money is often simple bigotry. I've been told "We don't take your Mickey Mouse money here." and similar phrases. Education would help greatly and I don't understand why the Scots & Irish banks don't issue their own notes at ATMs in England. It would be the quickest way I can see to end this nonsense.
But, are you saying you don't bank your money at least once a week anyway? So what difference does it make to you to bank any 'nationality' of note?
By the way, there's no such thing as an 'English' note. Bank of England notes are UK currency.0 -
I think the main jist of this argument is that the notes wherever they originate say £ sterling and as such anywhere £ sterling is legal tender it should be accepted. i.e. Falkland islands, Gibraltar, Isle of Man, Channel Islands, St Helina, Scotland, Northern Ireland and England but excluding Zimbabwe which is an unofficial user of £ sterling.Approach her; adore her. Do you change your notes into Scottish notes out of courtesy when you/if you come here? We've had ATM's here for many a year. It is your countrymen who have created the problem. Check the notes the Queen has no problem with them!!
All i'm saying is if you know theres a likelihood that you might have issues later on then why dont you use your noggin and do something to avoid the potential problem... it could be as simple as going to a barclays/nationwide/hsbc cashpoint before heading south... is that so difficult?
Oh and by the way.... Ive asked scottish people here up in glasgow and they all said they wouldnt accept NI notes as change... I asked why and they said "because they look at you funny in the shops"... and were talking the scottish shops not the english ones... its not just "my countrymen" that have created the problem...0 -
If I head down south, i take no money with me (or even abroad flying from an english airport). When I get over the border, I go to a cashline. (although I now know my local nationwide cashlines give out English notes).
I do this because it makes my life easier. When I'm in an Oldham backwater, looking to buy something from a local corner shop, I know the chances are they wont accept scottish money. I'm in the shop because I want what I'm buying. Leaving without it probably isnt an option.
Or if I've booked a hotel in Manchester (without paying for breakfast cause i'm tight) and I go to a snack bar for a roll (bap?)en-route to the airport, I'm aware I may go hungry if I dont have english money.
And if i'm in deepest Mexico, with only a bureau de change between me and certain death, I know they will accept an english £20 but not a Scottish one.
You can say blacks white, get upset and accuse people of being racists and bigots, but at the end of the day, thats the way it is. get over it. Move on. Grow up.0 -

Welcome to the discussion, finally someone that sees sense and likes an easy life!!! :beer:0 -
It's a pain in the bum having to change our money into BoE money whenever we go to the uk - you usually find people having a mad dash around shops/garages asking the assistants if they have any english money in their till
We (Guernsey) are a crown dependency and make our own laws (amongst other things) we can print our own money - but we have sworn allegience to the Queen of England so are protected in times of war (where were you when we were occupied during WW2?)
I have spent my Guernsey coins in the UK - and they have been refused a few times but only if the assistant is on the ball - they can be exchanged at the bank and have a one for one value so it's not as if they lose out (unless the bank charge them) and they will go into vending machines! Naughty I know, but it's just a little win for us to spread our coinage around a bit as we have loads of english, scottish, IOM and unfortunately Jersey money over here
On an aside.....in some of the pictures of the Libya plane crash, Guernsey £1 notes are visable - don't know if a collector was on board or even if someone had visited our island before the unfortunate crash.0
