Brian The Lion: I was in fact extracting the urine you could say, We Manx are actually proud of the fact we have our own currency and are not part of the UK. We know we cannot spend the notes anywhere else; mind you we can get a smug satisfaction of using our coins as they look almost the same. All of here know that we have to use inferior bank of England notes when we travel to your adjacent isle (note we are the mainland to us) and to that effect the cash points at the sea terminal and airport issue such toilet paper, (btw is it true the new bank of England notes will say I hope to pay the bearer). Also yes we can take money out at any ATM the safety of doing so over there is in question though. Well all I can say is thank god you have now got rid of the one eyed jock he was also doing us no favours.

  • do you reckon we'd have the same problem if we were all in the euro?

As a shop assistant at good old 'Woolworths' in the early 70's we were told that scottish notes were acceptable as long as they had the word 'Stirling' imprinted on them.

That is not really an issue as we are not part of the EEC thankfully, but in saying that we do get a lot of southern Irish here so many places accept Euros especialy during TT.

Isn't this theory a variant on Mark Twain's "Million Pound Note" argument? If it what you say were true, I could walk into a shop with my (admittedly made up in both senses) million pound note and buy a pint of milk. As it is highly unlikely that a grocers outside of Knightsbridge would be able to give me sufficient change they would refuse my cash and I could waltz out with the goods and never need to pay for anything ever again. I don't believe the real world works like that.

No - in a legal tender situation the exact money has to be given. If you give more the person you are paying can keep the change.

Ditto in a shop actually - they don't have to give change.

    • What if a shop refuses your cash? There's little you can do, shops don't have to sell you goods, whatever you offer for payment.
I'm not sure if this is correct. I thought that the shop has the right to refuse to enter a contract with you, but once the contract has been made the shopkeeper is obliged to accept your legal tender payment. If he refuses your legal tender payment in fulfilment of the contract then he has no legal right to stop you walking out of the shop with the goods. Of course I have never tested this, but would be interested to know if there is any truth in it.

The contract is not made until the shopkeeper has accepted your payment.

Coins and notes tend to be the same size and colour from all parts of the Sterling area.....

On the other hand, some years ago, I had a Guernsey 2p coin rejected by a shopkeeper in Cornwall. How petty.

Part 1 You will find Isle of Man notes cannot be mistaken in colour for UK notes.
Part 2 Like the Isle of Man you will find Channel Isles notes and coinage are NOT legal tender in the UK and in fact we only accept UK notes because it suits us for tourism and the fact they are bound by way of link rates for crown dependancy. So in fact it is not petty it is their legal right as the Guernsey was not legal tender.
