Item missing in post, seller or buyer to claim?

Im sure this has been raised before a million times..but browsing ebay tonight I see the following at the bottom of a listing Im considering bidding on..
PLEASE NOTE: I cannot be held responsible for items lost in the post. I always pack my items securely and always get a certificate of posting but once the parcel has been handed over to the Post Office then I have done all I can to ensure safe delivery and the rest is down to the postal service. I will assist in a claim (by providing the certificate of posting) but the claim must be made by the recipient not the sender.
Instantly Im put off..as the implication is..lost in the post..tough..not my problem:mad:
my understanding is that the recepient cannot make a claim for a missing item..it needs to be the sender so why do people put this on their listings??..or am I wrong..either way it puts me off straight away

Not the buyers problem. You just claim for item not received via paypal and you will be refunded if they quote that at you
Implication - The seller is a muppet0 -
as I suspected..many thanks for clearing that up!
very annoying when people quote that on their listings, and does not make me feel inclined to bid..
I find the statement slightly intimidatory..but maybe thats me...and Ive noticed it on a lot of listings these days0 -
I saw that on a few listings...did I bid, did I heck ?Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

Don't let it stop you bidding. You are protected anyway should you not receive it. I've seen that many times, from sellers with great feedback.0

I am just annoyed by sellers who think they can impose their own terms- shows they don't really understand the ebay selling/buying process and I would rather avoid them (unless I really want the thing and cannot get it anywhere else for that price- not happened yet!).Don't let it stop you bidding. Sometimes though its a way of getting a bargain as a lot of buyers ignore them0 -
They don't really think it's correct, they are just trying it on.0

Fair point, I am just annoyed by that sort of thing though (cut off ma nose to spite my face as my mother might say lol!).Sometimes though its a way of getting a bargain as a lot of buyers ignore themErmutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

They do it because ,on the whole, it works.Quite a rarified world on this forum of well informed people because , almost by definition, they're reading these posts which informs them of Ebay rules. Most people don't know the rules so when they read terms like those mentioned think they are fact so don't claim0

sadly it does put me off..especially this particular listing as it was in huge bold writing and was so intimidatory..some folk might not realise they can claim through paypal and may well be fobbed off by that statement..this was a business seller too0
