does the slicer actually result in saving money?

  • I use my processor for chopping and grating large amounts but use my slicer - which I bought about 20 years ago from Lakeland - for slicing. It is invaluable for potatoe bakes, coleslaw and especially stir fry. It only takes a minute to rinse under the tape - which I do immediately so as not to leave it in the sink to bite me - and then it is done. For small amounts I do use a knife. It is money saving in that pre-done stiry fry packs of veg are so expensive compared to making your own but chopping it all fine enough with a knife is difficult for those of us not trained. I does depend on what you are used to though cos my DD begged to be able to take my good slicer to uni with her and I kept the cheaper alternative at home - she hardly used it and now it has returned to its proper home in my kitchen.

  • I am somewhat at a loss at the moment as I've mislaid my V slicer [the old orange Borner one] and am contemplating buying another one ..... still looking around for a secondhand one though! It saves me a lot of money in that I'm more likely to do a stir fry with odds and ends with a V slicer, I can prep ingredients for a rissotto so much faster, my hotpots are a matter of minutes - I'm good with knives but this is so much faster for me, particularly now I'm having trouble with my hands. USE THE GUARD!!

Provided you remember to rinse it immediately and lot let anything dry onto it, it's as easy to wash as a knife. I don't get stuff stuck in mine - that's why I'd buy the more expensive one, but I wouldn't upgrade to a professional one - I'm not a pro and can't afford to/don't want to spend out on pro tools when this level suits me well. Hope this helps

    Hi,

I have got a v slicer that i bought at the ideal home show years ago .....which has sat in the back of a cupboard for ages ... I remember the time i first used it ... i just couldn't seem to get to grips with it ...
But after reading your post i think i will get it out and give it another try ..... I cook lots of stews etc so it hopefully speed things up for me !
Have you tried local charity shops to find a replacement ? .... You always see them in our local ones ..... If not what about looking on Ebay ...
Anyway i'll try mine again later today ....

  • Lil, glad to hear my post might drag some gadget into the daylight again! If you are using it for the first time in a while, do take the time to have a good look and a practise first.... and remember to ALWAYS use the guard if your fingers are within 2" of the blades. Just dont ask me how I know...

Also, with Christmas imminent, I find the v slicer v useful [ha ha!] for apple or orange slices for decorations [dry them out in a cooling oven, coated with cinnamon or spices, yum] or eating. If I can acquire some rather wrinkly oranges they make fantastic decorations and are usually free...

Toppings for pizzas are fast too.

Can you tell I am missing my slicer? [smile]

  • bought my first one about 8 years ago from Lakeland and am still using it . superb for slicing lemons and it will finely slice canned meat if you chill the can first. Makes lovely fine cabbage which cooks quickly. recently bought a second one for 50p at a car boot sale as it will come in useful for spares . USE THE GUARD though.

Could any of you recommend a brand? I had a very good one many years ago, but it got lost in a house move. A year or two ago I bought a cheap-ish 'mandoline' here in France, but it was useless and I ditched it in the end. It has made me cautious what to buy and yes, I would like to have one again!
Any advice welcome. I saw on the Lakeland site there is a Microplane gadget now that does slicing (I own one microplane grater, which is superb), has anyone tried it?

I'm another owner of the V-slicer ..... it languishes in a cupboard, I've tried to use it twice now, and I just can't get to grips with it at all.

    Sigh ....

  • I found that watching a demo helped enormously, and practising when I wasn't in a hurry. HTH
