i have a Zyliss mandolin which I got from lakeland. i tried the Jml one but after using catering quality ones in my last job i found it quite clumsy. the zyliss one was about £30 and i find it great.i can get about 15 slices from an average tomato!! It does make stuff go further especially for salads etc, and is really quick too.
you do have to watch the blades though as they are really sharp.

  • I've had a borner V slicer for approx 3 years now and it's great for chopping and slicing more or less anything. My mum has one too - we both swear by it...

My sister recently bought the JML one which is a cheaper copy, the blades are not as sharp and often bend out of shape when doing something harder like a potato, I'd say it's def worth investing in the borner one if you do lots of home cooking etc... think those ones are about £20

  • Have a look round car boot sales for the Borner V slicer. I got a brand new unused one for about 50p. You see lots of them all the time, which might say something about how much they get used, but perhaps the people who buy them live on fake food? To be honest, mine stays in the cupboard unless I'm making a big pile of coleslaw when it's invaluable for shredding the carrot. For small amounts I just use my julienne slicer. With other things I just make do with a sharp knife and less washing up. But for 50p, who cares?

BTW, for those who cry when chopping oinions, keep them in the fridge. It limits the action of the chemical that makes you cry. Since doing this, I only cry when I have a particularly strong onion.

I use a mandolin tto slice salami very thin - I buy the whole ones from Lidl. Always use the guard!!! It also does potatoes well for a bake

  • I've always bought them from ideal home shows but you can get them brand new off ebay and sometimes the shopping channels on the tv...

I use mine for mostly for salads, slicing carrots, dicing onions - if you use the thinner slicer it's almost like you've wizzed them in a food processer, cutting potatoes for chips, they slice cabbage great! slicing onions for burgers or onion rings...

You just have to get in the habit of using it I guess and remember you have it when you'd normally for the knife

Don't think "I'll just carefully put the last bit through" when it won't go through with the guard, not unless you want to throw the whole lot away because it's covered in blood.
