You shouldn't need to pay insurance for the first year anyway as it should be covered under the warranty.

So if an item has manufacturer's warrenty for a year anyway, how would I go about getting it fixed? Through the shop I bought it from, or through the manufacturer? Am I better off cancelling the £7.99 cover I took out on the dell laptop as well? (bought only last month). I hate to throw money away especially to a corporation such as currys etc.

Your first port of call should be Currys, not the manufacturer. You have the contract with them and the laptop has clearly failed to meet the implied standard of quality contained within that contract. Go to Currys first.

It's not covered under warranty for accidental damage, so if the insurance covers that you would still have to pay for it.

Quick update... took the netbook into Currys yesterday and spoke to someone who was far more helpful than last time... she sent me next door to PCworld where the tech guys are (my ex lol) and surprisingly he was very helpful. Netbook is being sent off to Samsung on tuesday and I won't be charged a penny. :)
