Microsoft Word help

Options
Hi,

Can anyone ot there help me ?

My laptop's os is XP and my desk top is ME. I have just completed an assignment for college ( on floppy disk) and cannot print it due to 'not having the installed convertors' I quote. My printers and such like are all hooked up to my desk top......I really dont want to shift everything so moving and installing the printer on the laptop is really a last resort. I'm sure I saw something on the windows site regarding a download that could be had to convert pre XP documents.......but for the life of me I can't remember where or what to look for..... does anyone out there know what I'm mean....and more importantly a way around my problem ?

cheers

  • another way to do this would be to use the save as facility.

click on the file button top left then save as, then in the bottom of the box that appears use the menu there to select word 6.

so when you save your work to a floppy save it as a word 6 style format.

this will make it compatible with the ME pc

It's got nothing to do with the operating system. It's to do with having different versions of Office.

    eer yes i know that

but i think you will find that winME pc's shipped with office 97 installed

office 97 had word 6 or later as its word component

office 6 started in the late versions of the office 4.3 suite

so whilst trying not to get to techie and geekie and explaining that it depended on what versions of word were installed on what machine and what would be compatible etc etc etc

it is a 99.9% safe bet that a word 6 file could be opened by any version she happened to have, on any pc , laptop etc from office 4.3 onwards.

i hope that clears up any confusion you seem to have blinky

Microsoft have never bundled Office in with any operating systems. A computer manufacturer / supplier may have pre-installed it in the machine you had.

a brief review of the facts can often avoid confusion.

and a little knowledge can also stop you looking silly too :D

It's what's known as a flame war, but it'll eventually run it's course and fizzle out.

I reckon they'll both end up violently agreeing with each other anyway.

Don't know the guy but, fwiw, blinky is one of the most highly respected and knowledgeable contributors on the Techie forum. Just take a look at his posts and the number of people he's helped out, and I think 'silly' is the last adjective one would choose to describe him.
