OK. Quick update. Change of plan.

Now have 2K lower budget. Thinking about a nearly new (as low mileage as possible) petrol Golf or Leon (don't do enough miles or long journeys to make diesel a viable option).

Would love a TSI engine to at least match the 100bhp car we currently drive whilst getting a nice amount of kit, good fuel economy and keeping the insurance costs down.

    Any suggestions?

They're all too small. We need a small 4/5 door family car.

How about a used Skoda Octavia (which is basically a Golf) or a Skoda Fabia. Both good cars and just as solidly built as their VW counterparts. A fair bit cheaper as well.

    Quick update ....

We decided to treat ourselves to a new car and, as the local VW dealer was prepared to match the price I could get a Golf for on the internet, we've gone ahead and ordered one.

    :T

It just proves that if you don't ask for a discount you don't get one. All you need to do is wait until the dealer has had a really poor month of sales and it gives you so much more bargaining power.

Thanks to everyone for your advice.
