Help regarding MIL going into care home

Hi guys, had a look round the board but thought this may be the best place to post, bit of a long story so will try and keep it brief and to the facts, if you need any more info please just ask as I know it won't be out of noseyness but so you guys can help.
My hubbies Dad died very suddenly almost 4 years ago, he left the family home and land split evenly between his wife and my hubby (no other children)
On Wednesday my mother in law suffered a stroke, she had a brain scan yesterday and things don't look good, they say she's had another one recently but nobody noticed (how bad do we feel?!?) there were no apparent signs.
She's obviously still in hospital at the moment, but we have been told that she may not recover very well and we might have to think about a care home.
She has some savings (about £40.000) and we are wondering if the worst comes to the worst and she has to go into a home, will they make her sell the house and land to pay for it once her savings are gone?
we're in Scotland (I think the rules here are different to those in England and Wales)
Just want to try and be prepared for whatever happens next, so if anyone is in the know your advice is much appreciated.
Thanks

Does your MIL live alone or do you live with her?0

Has your MIL been assessed for Continuing Health Care? It would definitely be worth looking into. My Grandad who has had several strokes was assessed before he left hospital and is now in a fully funded Nursing Home.
I found this on the Scottish age concern site. There is quite a bit of information on care homes and finances. There is also a bit about the continuing healthcare.
Hope it helps. Good luck

Thanks guys, sorry for just getting back just now but been at the hospital most of the day.
ONW- MIL lives on her own, though not far away from us.
JOhnwayne- thanks for the info, she's just got into the stroke unit today, no assesments have been made as yet and to be fair it is very early days, we got told today that she is very susseptible to having them and will likely have more in the future.
thanks for all the links etc, will have a look through them once I've got the kids to bed0 -

no worries, I know there will be questions and I'm fine with that0 -
Amistoso - can't offer any advice as thankfully never been in the position - but just wanted to say all the best for your MIL
I know you always try and help people on the boards - lets hope some of the links here are helpful to you and your hubby0 -
Hi Amistoso,
I can't offer any advice but just wanted to say try not to feel bad about not realising your MIL had already had a stroke. My Gran got admitted to hospital after a fall, and it transpired the fall was actually a stroke, and she had had several previously. Neither she nor me my Uncle (who she lived with) had noticed anything. I spoke to my friend who is a neuro physio, and she reassured me that they can happen without the person knowing anything had happened.
Gran spent a few days in hospital, then a month in a rehab unit, and then went on to have a fair few years back at home.
Hope things work out ok for you and your family.
Gone ... or have I?0 -
Hi, sorry to hear about your M-I-L, if she has had a TIA (mini-stroke) it is had to tell without a brain scan.
In reference to your query I can get the information to you tomorrow if you haven't found it before then. I am not sure off-hand but I have advised someone recently on a similar issue but I would need to see the advice guide at work.0 -
My FIL had many strokes (and heart attacks) and he came through much better than he was expected to, if the previous stroke was a TIA even a doctor being there while she had it may not notice it and might just put it down to a momentry lapse, anyone there for half hour or so may notice it but the nature of TIAs mean that they can be invisable.
You MIL is entitled to have a assessment for further NHS care in a care home or similar but to be honest thats miles away from where you are now, you must both be realing ATM and planning ahead can distract you but with things so up in the air looking at the basic rules might be best?0
