OMG I must be awful! My dog isn't allowed upstairs at all as it's all carpeted and I don't want her on my bed either. She got up there the first day we had her and pee'd on the carpet before I put the stairgate in. She has free reign of the downstairs and the back garden though, why does she need to go upstairs?

(I also didn't fancy the idea of the dog seeing OH and I in bed, IYSWIM?)

  • My dog only ever comes upstaris if I am working in the spare room (like now!) - and only if I tell her to come up - otherwise she stays downstairs.

I think every rescue I have ever had dealings with would be perfeclty happy with this - but you do get exceptions, clearly.

Battersea Dogs Home have a place in Kent as well which is the one we visited.
they were really nice, they seemed more concerned in matching the right dog to our family circumstances than anything else. They spend a lot of time getting to know each dog and if they are good with children etc. They gave us a form to say that we had been accepted which you take with you when you go to view the dogs. There was nothing suitable in kent so we were going to plan a trip to Battersea but then we were asked if we wanted to take on two westies from friends who were divorcing and as we knew the dogs already and knew how lovely they were we jumped at the chance, so we never ended up going.

Sorry for coming back to the thread late, I was taking next doors dog out for a walk LOL.

There's nothing I'm hiding from you guys, I've been straight up, the only thing I'm not disclosing is the breed we're interested in and our location, good reasons for that, the breed we're most interested in only has one national charity and it's them we're in contact with. And things with them are going OK, actually, we've submitted the re-homing questionnaire, joined their membership, I've filled out the standing order forms and as of today we're paid up members.

OH spoke on the phone today to the secretary of the local group at lunchtime, she's keen to meet us, has kindly invited us to their Spring show later this month, an invitation we've been delighted to accept. OH has explained our situation in great detail, by all accounts and this particular "dog lady" is more receptive to our circumstances than others have been so far ... in her words a lot of the rules, regs are "stuff and nonsense" and that it depends on the owners, the dog ... and not much else. And she's ever so keen to help.

She's asked us about our Summer holiday arrangements, because they've got a 3 y/o dog coming into their care this week, he's been living with a lady who's become very ill, he hasn't been exercised as he ought, he's hugely overweight ... but his health is otherwise good.

He hasn't been in the company of many other dogs, he's a bit anti social/aloof. He's used to being left to his own devices but they're also very keen to get him out and about, meeting other dogs, he needs to shift these extra pounds. His initial assessment will take a few weeks & provided that goes OK they'll be looking for him to be re-homed mid-June sometime.

And guess what ? That ties in perfectly with our Summer holidays ! Both of us are off for 3 weeks ! With nothing whatever planned ! You couldn't make it up !

So that's where we are, as of Mon 10th May !

Isn't it strange though, that someone involved with this rehoming charity has such a different outlook from the others we've spoken to ?

Anyway *touch wood* we'll see how it goes. Will keep you posted.

thats great news - it's worth knowing that dogsblog lists rescue dogs by breed, so you could look on there too - www.dogsblog.com - people were having a few problems with the site recently, but it appears to be fixed now!

It may seem strange, but there are no over-arching rules for rescues - they decide on their own - and if you, I and half a dozen other people all set up our own independant rescues, and had to think about how we would choose good homes to rehome to, we would all undoubtedly prioritise different things based on our own feelings and experiences - and these would change as time went on and we learned more about what made homings work, and what set them up to fail...
