Dog re-homing charities ... a bit OTT ??

The bottom line is that some rescues will rehome to you, some won't - there are no over-reaching policies, anyone can set up a rescue - so, rescues vary from a few well meaning volunteers working together and keeping the dogs in their own homes right up to massive national charities... with all sorts of other organisations and groups of people inbetween.
The policies and requirements will be as diverse as the rescues themselves.
To be honest, it is easy to be critical of rescues, but pease bear in mind, generally they do what they do becasue they care for dogs - its hard work, and do remember, they have no government funding, many of them are set up and run entirely by small groups of volunteers, and often funded from their own pockets.
After they have taken on, transported, fed, housed, neutered, chipped a dog, really it's up to them to choose the sort of home they feel is right for the individual dog...
I am certain that if you posted on dogpages outlining your circumstances (have owned rescue dogs before, no fencing but rural location, part time workers etc) you will find that some rescues will be perfectly happy with that set of circumstances for the right dog - it's not ideal for a cnanine escape artist with seperation anxiety, but it is for a dog who is not a roamer and who is content to be alone for a few hours a day.
Also, its probably worth visiting a couple of rescues locall and having a look at their dogs and a chat to the staff - if its a rural area they may be happier with rehoming to places without fencing, as its not uncommon.
Alternatively, you could consider a provate rehoming (maybe through a terrier forum) or going to the pound - they may be more relaxed about where the dog goes to, but you have less guarantees too...0 -
I wish you would give us an idea of the area you live in and how far you would travel as we may be able to suggest rescues more suitable for you.0

Absolutely - I think the OP has either been incredibly unlucky so far, or there is something they are have not told us which is concerning some of the rescues - OP do you have any tattoos saying 'I eat puppies' or anything?:rotfl:
People on here have certainly been sucessful in rehoming dogs without a fenced garden (uktigerlily had no probs) and working far longer than three hours a day (I was sometimes out for 6 hours a day or longer when I first got Badger, the rescue were happy with that after some discussion of provisos)0 -
Yes, I wondered if you came over a teeny bit defensive when you speak to "dog ladies"? May be because you are worried about being rejected it makes them a bit nervous why?0

The RSPCA really should be better than this - they are a large organisation, with paid staff, not a little bunch of stressed and over worked volunteers! Please do try other, smaller local rescues - it sounds ideal to me that you work different shifts - maybe she got the wrong end of the stick?0 -
Don't let this put you off. There are some very strange people out there you know! One rescue place the husband and wife argued with each other and we could hear them. She didn't want us to have the dogs(we wanted two brothers)
as when she asked us if they would have the run of the house and we replied yes except for the bedrooms, that was it ,she said we couldn't have them. They dragged the poor dogs away from us, they didn't want to go back and it broke my heart. But Battersea Dogs Home were completely different the lady who visited us said she does not allow her dog in her bedroom either and we passed their criteria.0 -
i didnt think of trying battersea dogs home!! i will have a quick search now,
yes well i thought it would be ideal as well. they let us have a kitten from them a year ago on this criteria!! i would have thought it would have been one rule for all animals but i guess not!!June 22 wins -

it cant be one rule for all... some animals needs are very different to others! If a dog has come into rescue as it had been howling and chewing when left alone... you would probably look for new owners that could be around a lot of the time... if you had a dog that didn't get on with other dogs, you wouldn't home it with someone who already had a dog etc etc...
Having said that I can only think that the person you spoke to at the RSPCA must have misunderstood you - it sounds ideal that someone is always home!!! TBH I would ring them back and ask where the issue lies..
Klee, dogpages and dogsblog are worth investigating too...
