Dell Inspiron 1501 Hard drive help plz

Hi everyone...

My mums laptop has been playing up for some time, first it deleted the user and all the users settings then it wiped all the favorites and icons from the desktop then when she would add something to her favorites and reboot it would disapear!

Anyway now it has died.

She has asked me to look at it ..

It comes on and says dell then nothing but a black screen so I went into the menu and ran the diagnostics tool... and it came up with a hard drive error i think it was 0142

After googling that it told me the harddrive is nackered and the only thing to do is reinstall windows to get temporary usage but it will happen again...

So I have reinstalled windows xp and it seems to be working

I wanted to ask is it worth buying a new hard drive or would you just buy a new laptop?

If it's working, no point buying another, new hard disks don't cost much (£30+) if it does fail.

Backup anything important.

I'm on my 3rd hard drive in 4 years for my Dell Inspiron 6000-never again will I buy Dell!

Dell don't make them, you'll probably find the same hard disk in a lot of other brands.

Ok thanks so if I buy one of these for the laptop is it as easy as taking the old one out and putting the new one in? I aint got a clue, I know I would need to reinstall windows

Does it still fail the hd diagnostics?

Did you use a vista dvd to reinstall, or recovery partition, do you have an external (usb) hard disk available?

I used my dell recovery disk that came with my pc, it installed XP

I dont have an external hd

Im gonna check the diagostics now
