Belkin Wireless Router Keeps Disconnecting

Options
Hi Peeps

Please can somebody help as my Belkin wireless router is driving me potty.

I’m on VM 10Mb BB (Cable) and have a Belkin F5D7230-4 (G) router and have a laptop and more recently a printer connected wirelessly plus OH has his Xbox connected by ethernet straight into the router. Without warning we keep losing the connection, the laptop and printer disconnect and the Xbox loses the wired connection as well. When I look at the router the “wireless” and “internet” lights have gone out but the cable modem still shows as being connected to the internet. No problem re-connecting though once the router has been re-booted.

I been through the router trouble-shooting guide and have disconnected the printer from the network and even reset the router to factory settings but this hasn’t made any difference. The problem seems to happen more when I’m on the laptop and OH is on his Xbox – am wondering if my router needs to be upgraded to an N to be able to cope or maybe it’s ready for the knacker’s yard!

Any advice greatly received (I’m not hugely techie so go easy on me) :D

Sounds like a problem with the router. Fortunately Belkin network products have a lifetime guarantee. Just call 0845 607 7787 or go to their website to contact them online. I got a replacement laptop card in about 5 days. Hope it goes well.

Thanks for the info. The router is about 5 years old and I don't have the original receipt nor do I remember registering it on their website - presumably I would need this to get a replacement?
  • Sounds like a connection issue between the modem and the router. If the internet light goes off on the router it doesnt think it's loggin on the VM servers. Changing anything with the wireless shouldn't have any affect on this.

If your being 'traffic shaped' then many routers will lose the connection

Mmmmm ....... this could well be the reason and may explain why it usually (but not always) disconnects when OH has xbox on. Is there a way of monitoring the traffic from both the laptop and xbox so I can confirm this???????? Are certain brands of router better at dealing with this than others - i've read that Belkin has a bad reputation for disconnections.

    Thanks :D

Ive no idea how you'd monitor the traffic from the xbox im afraid

There are bandwidth monitoring progs for pcs but I cant recall them (sorry)

Personally I use i-speeder to check download and upload rates at any given time.

I cant see you being traffic shaped purely from xbox usage unless its downloading demos etc. Usually its from P2P progs or whatever on the pc.
Out of interest, if it was me ~
Next time it happens id reboot and check the download speed ~
    http://www.speedtest.net/

I have 10Mb virgin too and speedest will be very close to the full 10Mb unless your being shaped when it can go down to 2.5Mb or even 1 something

Thanks AliEnRIK. We don't have any P2P progs or anything like that on the laptop and OH only downloads the odd demo on the xbox. I do use speedtest.net once a day just out of curiosity and like you I always get very close to 10mb but I'll try it when it disconnects again. I have no other issues with the router and always get 54mbps but the disconnecting is so inconvenient - sometimes it happens once yet other days it can be 2-3 times

Looked at the connections? A loose wire would cause that (Im talking more about the white virgin cables)
Also, is the router getting hot? Maybe try putting it somewhere where the heat can disperse better?

I've checked all the connections and they are ok. The router is slighty warm on top but definitely wouldn't describe it as hot, it sits on a glass shelf under the tv - could the location be the problem?????

Sounds fine where it is so long as it isnt enclosed and nothing below it runs too hot (Like a big amp say)
