hi, not sure if this is in the right place but here goes....
for some reason my bank stopped paying out direct debits even though there is enough money in there. so because there are no direct debit details on my car insurance policy, the company cancelled my policy? can they do that? i dont owe them any money, as i paid every month. im just confused?

Have you yet missed any payments ?
The longa nd short is yes they can cancel howeve rthere are proceedures that do need to be followed and one of those is a 7 day cancellation letter, giving you as it says 7 days to contact them and sort it out.
Some fairly standard proccedures would be to issue a letter advising of missed dd and then a second if both are ignored to issue a 7 day letter advising policy will cancel in 7 days if no contact made.0 -
all payment have been paid. €basically the sent a letter sayin that the direct debit had been refused an they needed it again. so i paid them that months an gave the details again thinking they might be wrong. next month, another letter sayin the same thing. so i paid it on the 29th april and said i was going to the bank the next day to sort it. for unforseen circumstances i couldnt go on the saturday and i work during the week. so i was going to go in today but last night i received a text message from my insurer saying as from the 14th may, my policy is cancelled, giving me 7 days notice. i called them up and they said its already done and cant be reversed!0

I would speak to a manager protocol is right giving you 7 days however for it to not be reversable isnt its not physically cancelled so of course it can be reversed..
who are you insured with ?
btw. I have seen 3 strike rules in the past where by insurers refuse to let you pay by dd if 3 fail but they always give the opportubity to pay up the policy in full0 -
im with a broker, auto direct. but it is highway insurance, which is LV i think. i spoke to a manager and she said there was nothing she can do, and they can not reverse it. in the text message it said the reason for cancellation was due to no response to reminders? but i obviously responded as they received payment, and have records showing i called them.
they didnt tell me about the 3 strike policy. so hope it isnt that. i was told by a customer advisor and the manager that i couldn't pay the rest in full and that the policy will be cancelled. this is very annoying.0 -

Try and escalate this to get the decision reversed. Having a cancelled policy on your record can cause major problems trying to take out insurance in the future.0 -
thanks, i have escalated it now. but the manager i spoke to told me that highway insurance take a very very stricked policy with regards to this. i dont know exactly what she meant but i have to wait till monday to contact highway. what annoys me is that its not as if im sitting back and not trying to sort out the dd. the received a dd mandate from me on the 18th april. so im obviously trying to get the situation sorted!0

Quentin .
Hope this isnt a daft question but when you say that having a cancelled policy on your record can cause major probs ...... thats only if the INSURER cancels it isnt it?
If i cancel a policy mid way through to change to another insurer that wouldnt cause hassle would it ?

No question is daft if you do not know the answer, however you have answered both your questions correctly yourself.:)0 -

Im dubious about asking questions on here sometimes.....the last time i did i got some really nasty replies , baffles me why some people bother ?
So....thanks again , its appreciated.

No problem, just be aware that if you do cancel a policy half way through a year it is an annual policy and you will more than likely get hit with cancellation charges0
