brakes making a scraping noise

this week i purchased a 2001 renault scenic, before buying i took it for a test drive and eveything seemed ok, however since i purchased it we went out in it for a longer drive, everything again seems ok with it except one fault, and this does not happen every time but only every so often, but when i press on the brake pedal i get what is best described as a scraping noise coming from my 2 front brakes(cant tell if it is the back ones as well), and like i say this does not happen every time and the veichcle does come to a stop or slow down as required, took it back to the dealer today who tells me all is well with the brakes, apart from a bit of rust on the top of the disks, which is causing the noise, which he says he has cleaned up a bit and should stop the noise, well on way home i went for a long spin in it, and the noise still happens every so often, my question is what is the probability of what the dealer is telling me being true, and it is nothing to worry about, or should i go and get it checked out independantly, as i say it does not happen everytime, and the veichle reacts in the way i expect when i press the breaks, any advice gratefully appreciated.

TIA
Take every day as it comes!!

My car doesnt go out to play very often. After a couple of weeks in the garage, i get the scrapey sound too due to a low level build up of surface rust on the disks. As soon as you apply the boots, the disc pads rub on it and it reverberates and sounds a lot louder than it is. If the garage has checked the pads and they are ok,you may well find the noise will go with regular use. Is it discs all round or drums on the back?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

    This.
I wouldn't worry. Dealer would be the first person to want to charge you for something you don't really need so:

    1. Well done on finding a trustworthy dealer.
    2. Your brakes are fine. :D

My car does this when its been stood a few days as well, probably because I live near the sea.

This should be made a sticky; I'm sure there's lots of people who don't know this and may get stung for new discs & pads unneccessarily.

It shouldn't happen after a " long spin " in it, get an independent garage to check them out.

would say if its been stood a while then there will most prob be rust built up on the edge of the discs.
worth getting checked out by someone else for peace of mind

Can you see the pads through the wheels? Is there much meat left on them?Any surface rust from being stood usually gets scrubbed off with the 1st few dabs of the brakes. It sounds like your pads could be nearly worn and you're getting a bit of metal on metal.
If you can't see the pads then jack the car up and remove the wheel.Support it on axle stands or if you don't have any put the wheel under the wishbone in case the jack slips.
It might be your imagination but this is an easy DIY that costs nothing and gives you some peace of mind.

i am taking it in to the garage i normally use on tuesday, and they are gonna check it out free gratis, then if there are any problems i am gonna go back to where i brought it from, as i suspect they did not even take the wheels off to find out what the problem is, so if my garage tell me the pads are no good, then it will make them look pretty stupid

I had a similar intermittent problem (in a Fiat) and it turned out to be a clip on one of the calipers which had come loose, and occasionally would scrape against the disc, so worth getting properly checked out!
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

    1. sounds like dealer is right
    2. to be safe go get them checked out by a decent garage, ie not kwik fit. not worth chancing when it comes to brakes.

My car went roughly 5 weeks ago for MOT to a well known garage, all was well, advisory given for brakes, I had a scraping/ grinding noise coming from the back when I braked when OH checked them the brake pad had worn away and the grinding was the metal from the pad against the disc took it to another garage £335 later new dics on the back and new pads back and front.

Get someone else other than the garage you bought it from to check them out. The selling outfit aren't being fair, they will try to avoid having to spend on it.

For what it's worth it sounds like the calipers are sticking slightly under light braking, ie may be rusted up. ;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
